चार मित्र

दक्षिण देश में गोदावरी नदी के सुरम्य उपवन में चार सर्वथा भिन्न प्रकृति के जीवों में अद्भुत और पवित्र मैत्री थी—लघुपतनक नाम का चतुर कौवा, मंथरक नाम का शांत कछुआ, हिरण्यक नाम का नीति-कुशल मूषक और चित्रांग नाम का एक सुंदर, चंचल कस्तूरी मृग। जाति, आकार और वास-स्थान भिन्न होते हुए भी उनके विचार, प्रेम और निष्ठा एक थे। प्रतिदिन सायंकाल वे एक विशाल वटवृक्ष के नीचे सरोवर तट पर एकत्र होते, ज्ञान-चर्चा करते और एक-दूसरे के सुख-दुख साझा करते थे।

In the verdant river valleys of the southern realm flourished a sanctuary blessed by the waters of the Godavari. There dwelt four companions whose bond defied the harsh laws of nature: Laghupatanaka, an observant crow; Mantharaka, an introspective pond turtle; Hiranyaka, a mouse endowed with philosophical wisdom; and Chitrangada, a swift-footed gazelle. Though belonging to disparate realms of air, water, and earth, mutual empathy united their spirits. Each twilight beneath a holy banyan, they convened to share the harvest of the day and deliberate upon virtues.

एक दिन गोधूलि वेला में हिरन सरोवर पर नहीं लौटा। तीनों मित्र व्याकुल हो उठे। लघुपतनक कौवे ने आकाश में ऊँची उड़ान भरी और पूरे वन का निरीक्षण किया। कुछ ही दूरी पर उसने देखा कि चित्रांग एक शिकारी द्वारा बिछाए गए मजबूत सन के फँदे में असहाय पड़ा तड़प रहा है। कौवा तुरंत नीचे उतरा। हिरन ने विलाप करते हुए कहा—'सखे! मेरी देह इस फँदे में जकड़ी है, शिकारी कुछ ही पलों में आने वाला है। अब केवल विधाता ही मेरा रक्षक है।' कौवे ने ढांढस बंधाया—'धैर्य रखो मित्र! जब तक सच्चे मित्र जीवित हैं, काल भी तुम्हारा बाल बाँका नहीं कर सकता।'

One evening as shadows lengthened, Chitrangada failed to appear. Anxiety gripped the sanctuary. Unfurling his glossy black wings, Laghupatanaka ascended into the twilight thermals, combing the forest trails. Half a league away, he spotted the gentle deer tangled hopelessly within the twisted gut-ropes of a hunter's snare. Dropping through the branches, the crow found his brother weeping: 'Death approaches on swift feet, companion. The trapper inspects his nets at dawn; my life is forfeit.' Laghupatanaka comforted him: 'Despair not, brother! True friends are the armor of the righteous; while we draw breath, no cord shall strangle you.'

लघुपतनक तुरंत उड़कर सरोवर लौटा और अपनी पीठ पर हिरण्यक चूहे को बैठाकर ले आया। हिरण्यक के तीखे दाँत सन के मजबूत रस्सियों को कुतरने में अद्वितीय थे। कुछ ही क्षणों में चूहे ने जाल की रस्सियों को काट दिया और चित्रांग स्वतंत्र हो गया। परंतु तभी दुर्भाग्य से धीमी गति वाला मंथरक कछुआ भी अपने मित्र के प्रति प्रेमवश वहाँ पहुँच गया। उसी क्षण झाड़ियों में से धनुष-बाण लिए शिकारी के पदचाप सुनाई दिए। संकट देखकर हिरन छलाँग लगाकर सघन वन में ओझल हो गया, कौवा वृक्ष की चोटी पर जा बैठा और चूहा बिल में समा गया।

Soaring back to the pool, the crow gathered Hiranyaka upon his back and returned at skimming speed. The mouse’s diamond-sharp incisors set to work with frantic precision, severing the hemp cords strand by strand until Chitrangada stepped free. Yet in that very instant, their joy turned to horror: Mantharaka the tortoise, unable to bear anxious waiting in safety, had crawled through the brambles to be near his brothers. Simultaneously, dry twigs snapped beneath the heavy leather boots of the approaching hunter. In instinctive panic, the gazelle vanished into the thicket, the crow shot skyward, and the mouse darted into a fissure.

परंतु मंदगति कछुआ भाग न सका। शिकारी ने जब अपना जाल कटा हुआ देखा तो वह क्रोध से तिलमिला उठा, परंतु जब उसकी दृष्टि रेंगते हुए कछुए पर पड़ी तो उसने सोचा—'हिरन तो भाग गया, परंतु यह कछुआ भी कम स्वादिष्ट नहीं है।' उसने कछुए को उठाया, अपने मजबूत सन के थैले में बाँध लिया और धनुष कंधे पर टांगकर चल पड़ा। तीनों मित्रों ने छिपकर यह दृश्य देखा तो उनका हृदय विदीर्ण हो गया। हिरण्यक चूहे ने कहा—'एक संकट से छूटे नहीं कि दूसरे ने घेर लिया! अपने मित्र को बंधक छोड़कर जीवित रहने से मर जाना बेहतर है। हमें तुरंत कोई साहसिक युक्ति निकालनी होगी।'

Only the armored tortoise remained stranded in the hunter’s path. Discovering his shattered snare, the hunter cursed in fury, yet spying the ponderous turtle, he muttered: 'The deer has fled, but this shelled crawler will yield meat and broth for my hearth.' Seizing Mantharaka, he shoved him into a rawhide sack, tied it firmly with sinew, and slung it across his broad shoulders. From the canopy and grass, the three free companions watched in agony. Hiranyaka wept: 'One calamity gives birth to another! What dishonor to feast upon liberty while our benefactor lies captive in a sack! We must risk all to break his bonds!'

हिरण्यक ने एक चमत्कारी योजना बनाई। उसने कहा—'चित्रांग, तुम शिकारी के मार्ग में आगे जाकर सरोवर किनारे ऐसे लेट जाओ जैसे तुम्हारी मृत्यु हो चुकी हो। लघुपतनक तुम्हारी आँख पर बैठकर चोंच मारने का अभिनय करेगा। शिकारी जब मृत हिरन को देखेगा, तो वह कछुए का थैला जमीन पर रखकर हिरन को उठाने दौड़ेगा। उसी क्षण मैं थैले की गाँठ कुतर दूँगा और मंथरक को जल में सुरक्षित पहुँचा दूँगा।' मित्रों ने इस योजना को अक्षरशः क्रियान्वित किया। शिकारी ने जब मार्ग में निश्चेष्ट पड़े विशाल मृग को देखा और कौवे को उस पर बैठे पाया, तो उसके लोभ का ठिकाना न रहा।

The wise mouse formulated a daring plan: 'Chitrangada, run swiftly along the ravine and cast yourself beside the riverbank, stiff and motionless as a carcass. Laghupatanaka, perch upon his forehead and peck near his eye as scavengers do. Blinded by avarice at discovering prime venison without shedding an arrow, the hunter will discard his sack and sprint forward. The moment his back is turned, my teeth shall liberate Mantharaka into the reeds!' Executing the stratagem with breathtaking courage, the gazelle collapsed like marble beside the shallows, the crow acting the grim gravedigger above him.

शिकारी ने तुरंत भारी थैले को ज़मीन पर पटका और हिरन को उठाने के लिए दौड़ा। जैसे ही वह कुछ कदम दूर गया, हिरण्यक ने बिजली की गति से थैला काट दिया और कछुआ छपाक से गहरे जल में समा गया। ज्यों ही शिकारी हिरन के समीप पहुँचा, चित्रांग वायु की गति से छलाँग लगाकर घने वनों में विलीन हो गया और कौवा काँव-काँव करता उड़ गया। जब निराश शिकारी थैले के पास लौटा, तो उसने देखा कि थैला कटा हुआ है और कछुआ भी गायब है। वह भूत-प्रेत का भय मानकर खाली हाथ भाग खड़ा हुआ। चारों मित्र पुनः आनंदपूर्वक वटवृक्ष के नीचे मिले। यह कथा प्रमाणित करती है कि जब अलग-अलग सामर्थ्य वाले प्राणी निःस्वार्थ भाव से संगठित होते हैं, तो दुनिया की कोई भी शक्ति उन्हें पराजित नहीं कर सकती।

Greed overcame all caution. Dropping the heavy rawhide sack in the dirt, the hunter dashed toward the prize. In that exact window of opportunity, Hiranyaka’s incisors sheared the knots; the sack gaped open and Mantharaka slipped silently beneath the muddy waves. Just as the hunter's fingers brushed the velvet flank of the stag, Chitrangada exploded into a majestic arc of muscle, vanishing into the sunbeams while the crow mocked from the sky. Reeling in terror at this sorcery, the hunter stumbled back to find his bag shredded and empty. Believing the woodland haunted by forest spirits, he cast down his bow and fled. Reunited beneath their sacred banyan, the four brothers celebrated life. The ancient wisdom stands immortal: an alliance of diverse hearts, bound by sacrificial loyalty, renders the weak mightier than kings.
