कोहरे में लालटेन

अरुण और उसका चचेरा भाई निखिल सूर्यास्त से पहले कर्मचारियों वाले विश्राम-स्थल तक पहुँचने के लिए चिह्नित प्रकृति-पथ पर चल रहे थे। पहाड़ी पर अचानक घना कोहरा छा गया। पेड़ों की कतार के पार अरुण को छोटी-सी रोशनी दिखाई दी। उसने कहा, “वह ज़रूर विश्राम-स्थल होगा,” और उधर मुड़ने लगा।

Arun and his cousin Nikhil were walking on a marked nature trail toward a staffed rest shelter before sunset. A patch of thick fog rolled across the hillside. Through the mist, Arun noticed a small light beyond a line of trees. “That must be the shelter,” he said, and began to turn toward it.

निखिल ने उसे रुकने को कहा। रोशनी बहुत दूर भी हो सकती थी या किसी ऐसी इमारत की हो सकती थी जिसका रास्ते से कोई संबंध न हो। कोहरे में उन्हें पथ का परिचित दृश्य दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था। वे साथ रहे और केवल अगले दिखाई देने वाले चिह्न तक बढ़े। जब अगला चिह्न साफ़ नहीं दिखा, तो वे सुरक्षित जगह पर रुके और साथ लाए मार्ग-निर्देश देखे।

Nikhil asked him to pause. The light might be far away, or it might belong to a building unrelated to the trail. In the fog, their usual view of the path was gone. They stayed together and moved only as far as the next visible trail marker. When they could not see the next marker clearly, they stopped in a safe place and checked the route information they had been given.

रोशनी फिर झिलमिलाई, लेकिन वे उसके पीछे नहीं गए। उन्होंने तय नक्शे का उपयोग किया, चलने से पहले समझाई गई प्रक्रिया के अनुसार पथ-कार्यालय से संपर्क किया और स्पष्ट निर्देश मिलने तक प्रतीक्षा की। एक कर्मचारी ने उन्हें वापस चिह्नित रास्ते तक पहुँचाया। बाद में पता चला कि रोशनी विश्राम-स्थल की नहीं, बल्कि काम करने वाले शेड की थी।

The light flickered again, but they did not follow it. Instead, they used the agreed map, contacted the trail office using the signal procedure explained before their walk, and waited for clear instructions. A staff member guided them back to the marked route. Later, they learned that the light came from a work shed, not the rest shelter.

अरुण को लगा कि वह लगभग गलत दिशा में चला गया था, इसलिए उसे शर्म आई। निखिल ने कहा कि आगे का रास्ता खोजने की कोशिश करना गलत नहीं था, लेकिन अनिश्चित संकेत को पक्का सच मानना जोखिम भरा हो सकता था। वे अपेक्षा से देर से पहुँचे, मगर सुरक्षित पहुँचे। अरुण ने बात याद रखी: आशा हमें आगे बढ़ने में मदद करती है, लेकिन आशाजनक संकेत प्रमाण नहीं होता। परिस्थिति स्पष्ट न हो तो साथ रहें, भरोसेमंद चिह्नों का उपयोग करें और अनुमान लगाने के बजाय सहायता माँगें।

Arun felt embarrassed that he had almost followed it. Nikhil told him that noticing a possible way forward was not foolish; treating an uncertain sign as a fact could have been risky. They reached the shelter later than expected but safely. Arun remembered the lesson: hope can help us continue, but a hopeful sign is not proof. When conditions are unclear, stay together, use reliable markers, and ask for help rather than guessing.
