The Map with No Shortcut
Kabir’s family had planned a short hike to a lookout point. Their printed map showed a narrow shortcut that would save nearly half an hour. At the start of the trail, however, they found a barrier and a notice saying that the shortcut was closed because of recent rockfall.
One adult thought the group could walk carefully around the barrier. Kabir pointed out that the notice did not explain whether the path beyond it was stable. Their guide agreed that guessing was not worth the risk. The group stepped away from the closed route, checked the official trail information on the guide’s phone, and asked a park worker about the recommended path.
The safe route was longer and included a rest stop. They checked that everyone had water, adjusted their pace, and told a family member when they expected to return. They reached the lookout later than planned, but the view was still beautiful.
Kabir wrote the updated route in his notebook and crossed out the old shortcut. He learned that a map is a guide, not a promise. Good planning includes checking current conditions, listening to responsible advice, and changing course when new information shows that the original plan is unsafe.
