The Storyteller’s Two Endings
At the community reading club, storyteller Sana described a disagreement between two students, Mira and Rohan, who were preparing a poster for a school exhibition. Rohan saw Mira fold the poster and thought she was refusing to finish it. Mira saw Rohan carrying the poster away and thought he wanted to take credit for her work. Their voices grew sharp, and neither asked a question.
Sana first told an ending in which they kept guessing each other’s motives. Rohan made a new poster without checking the facts, Mira stopped helping, and the group missed its display deadline. The audience said both students had behaved badly.
Then Sana offered another ending. Rohan explained that he feared the deadline would be missed. Mira explained that the printer had left a dark smudge across the heading and she had folded the poster carefully so she could repair it. Rohan admitted he had carried it away without asking. Mira acknowledged that she should have told him what she was doing. The smudge still needed fixing, and both had to help repair the poster, but they agreed on a plan and finished it together.
Sana asked the listeners whether understanding the reasons meant that every action was acceptable. They said no: intentions matter, but so do impact, evidence, and responsibility. The story reminded them to ask before assuming, listen carefully, and still repair any harm their actions cause.
