पाँच मिनट आगे चलने वाली घड़ी

हर गुरुवार स्कूल का पठन-समूह कमरा नंबर बारह में मिलता था। बैठक के बाद सदस्यों के पास किताबें रखने और कमरे को व्यवस्थित करने के लिए दस मिनट होते थे। हाल में बहस शुरू हो गई थी। कुछ विद्यार्थी कहते कि बाकी लोग तय समय से पहले चले जाते हैं; दूसरे कहते कि वे दीवार की घड़ी में पाँच बजे तक रुके थे।

Every Thursday, the school reading club met in Room Twelve. After the meeting, members had ten minutes to put books away and tidy the room. Recently, arguments had started. Some students said the others left before the agreed finish time; others insisted that they had stayed until the wall clock showed five o’clock.

मतभेद व्यक्तिगत आरोपों में बदलने लगा। एक विद्यार्थी ने कहा, “तुम कभी मदद नहीं करते।” दूसरे ने जवाब दिया, “तुम हमेशा हम पर आरोप लगाते हो।” समूह की मार्गदर्शक श्रीमती सेन ने सभी को रुककर बताने को कहा कि उन्होंने वास्तव में क्या देखा था। एक विद्यार्थी को लगा कि दीवार की घड़ी उसके फ़ोन से आगे चल रही है। उन्होंने समय की तुलना एक विश्वसनीय डिजिटल घड़ी से की और कुछ मिनट बाद फिर जाँची। दीवार की घड़ी लगातार पाँच मिनट आगे थी।

The disagreement grew personal. “You never help,” one student said. “You always accuse us,” another replied. Their club guide, Mrs. Sen, asked them to pause and describe what each person had actually seen. One student noticed that the wall clock seemed ahead of the time on her phone. They compared it with a trusted digital clock and checked it again a few minutes later. The wall clock was consistently five minutes fast.

उन्होंने यह निष्कर्ष नहीं निकाला कि हर शिकायत गलत थी या समय ही एकमात्र समस्या थी। सभी ने तय किया कि बैठक का अंतिम समय लिखकर रखा जाएगा, एक जाँचे हुए टाइमर का उपयोग होगा और हर व्यक्ति की ज़िम्मेदारी पहले से स्पष्ट होगी। अनुमति लेकर एक विद्यार्थी ने दीवार की घड़ी ठीक की और दूसरे ने साप्ताहिक सूची में घड़ी जाँचने का काम जोड़ दिया।

They did not conclude that every complaint was wrong or that timekeeping was the only problem. They agreed to set the official finish time in writing, use one checked timer, and review who was responsible for which task. A student adjusted the wall clock with permission, and another added the check to the club’s weekly routine.

अगले गुरुवार बैठक बिना उसी बहस के समाप्त हुई। सभी को सफ़ाई में अपना हिस्सा करना था, लेकिन अब वे अलग-अलग घड़ियों के आधार पर एक-दूसरे को दोष नहीं दे रहे थे। उन्होंने सीखा कि किसी के चरित्र पर निर्णय देने से पहले उस जानकारी और व्यवस्था को जाँचना समझदारी है जिस पर सभी भरोसा करते हैं। तथ्यों की जाँच व्यक्तिगत ज़िम्मेदारी को समाप्त नहीं करती; वह ज़िम्मेदारी को अधिक निष्पक्ष और स्पष्ट बनाती है।

The next Thursday, the club finished without the same argument. Members still had to do their share of the cleanup, but they no longer blamed one another based on conflicting clocks. They learned that before judging someone’s character, it is wise to verify the information and systems everyone is relying on. Checking facts does not remove personal responsibility; it makes responsibility fairer and easier to understand.
