The Elephant and the Sparrows
Within the emerald wilderness of Chitrakoot thrived a peaceful woodland sanctuary. High upon the leafy branch of a towering tamala tree, a devoted pair of sparrows built their home with tender affection. Over long months, they had painstakingly gathered dry grass, downy feathers, and silk threads to craft an exquisite, sheltered nest. With the dawn of spring, the female sparrow laid three delicate, spotted eggs. Joy illuminated their tiny realm as both parents took turns brooding the clutch, dreaming of the day their fledglings would sing under the morning canopy.
One stifling summer noon, when the sun scorched the glades, a gargantuan bull elephant named Madonmatta stormed through the woodland, maddened by hormonal fury and boundless hubris. Tearing saplings from the soil and trampling innocent creatures beneath his massive feet, he charged beneath the tamala tree. Seeking shade and intoxicated by sheer destructive whim, the colossus wrapped his massive trunk around the very bough bearing the sparrows' nest and snapped it like a dry reed. The delicate nest plummeted to the earth, smashing into pieces, and the three unhatched eggs were obliterated in the dirt. Though the parents fluttered away just in time, they watched their future crushed before their eyes.
Perched beside the smashed shells, the mother sparrow wept with heartbreaking grief. Her cries reached her loyal companion, Kashthakuta the woodpecker. Alighting beside her, he spoke with gentle fortitude: 'Weep no more, dear sister. Tears cannot revive the fallen, and the wise do not waste their spirits in passive mourning; they demand justice. That rampaging brute did not merely crush your eggs; he trampled the sacred peace of our forest. We must exact retribution for his arrogance.' The sparrow sobbed, 'We are but frail, winged specks; how can we challenge a moving mountain?' Kashthakuta replied firmly, 'Before the synchronized power of intellect and alliance, mountains crumble into dust. Come, let us consult our ally, the fly Veena-vadana.'
The woodpecker and the sparrows flew to the hollow log where Veena-vadana the buzzing fly dwelled. Hearing of the tragedy, she enlisted the master strategist of the marshlands, Meghnada the frog king. Gathering beneath the ferns, the four created a masterplan. Meghnada spoke with deliberate resolve: 'The tyrant’s sole advantage is bulk, but his senses are utterly vulnerable to surgical precision. Tomorrow at noon, when the sun blazes and thirst parches his throat, sister fly will hover inside his ears, humming an intoxicating drone. Lulled by that hypnotic melody, when the colossus closes his eyes in bliss, brother woodpecker shall pierce his pupils with his razor beak. The final act rests upon my shoulders.'
The next day, as blistering heat enveloped the forest, the fly swooped into the giant’s ears, releasing a mesmerizing, melodic buzz. Soothed by the rhythmic vibration, the brute sighed and closed his heavy eyelids. In that fraction of a second, the woodpecker struck with surgical velocity, driving his spear-like beak into the beast's pupils. A deafening roar of agony shook the trees as the blinded giant staggered blindly through the thickets. Agonizing pain and loss of blood ignited a feverish, burning thirst, driving him to stumble wildly in search of water.
At that critical juncture, from the rim of a treacherous, bottomless peat quagmire, Meghnada and his amphibian chorus began to croak loudly in unison. Blinded and delirious, the elephant reasoned that where frogs rejoiced, a broad, freshwater lake must lie. Stumbling frantically toward the sound, the colossus charged forward—and plummeted headlong into the bottomless mire. The heavy mud sucked at his massive legs; the harder he thrashed, the deeper he sank into the suffocating abyss. Exhausted and helpless, the tyrant vanished beneath the mire. From the canopy above, the sparrow couple watched their oppressor fall, their grief sanctified by righteous retribution. The eternal truth was established: when even the frailest unite under disciplined strategy, no tyrannical giant on earth can escape their righteous triumph.
