The Rule That Hurt One Person
The school gardening club had grown popular, and meetings often ran longer than planned. To solve this, the members agreed to a rule: suggestions could be shared only during the first five minutes. After that, the group would choose tasks and begin work. Everyone thought the rule was fair because it applied to all.
Noor wanted to suggest placing a water barrel closer to the vegetable beds. On club days, however, her school bus often arrived just after the first five minutes had passed. She tried to tell the group later, but the chairperson reminded her of the rule. After several weeks, Noor stopped attending.
When the club reviewed its progress, members noticed that Noor’s practical ideas were missing. The chairperson asked what was making it difficult for her to contribute. Noor explained the bus schedule. She was not asking for the meeting to wait every week; she wanted a fair way to share ideas.
The club discussed the rule’s purpose: keep meetings efficient and make sure everyone could contribute. They decided that members could submit short written suggestions before the meeting or place them in a box beside the garden. The chairperson would read every suggestion during the planning period, without naming the writer unless they wanted to be named.
The meetings stayed short, and Noor’s idea about the water barrel was adopted. The club learned that a rule can look equal on paper but still create an unfair barrier in practice. Reviewing a rule respectfully is not the same as ignoring all rules; it is a way to make sure the rule serves its purpose.
