The Tortoise and the Geese
Within the verdant woodlands of Magadha lay an expansive sanctuary of azure waters named Phullotpala. Sacred lotuses adorned its shimmering surface, and fragrant breezes whispered through the reeds. There dwelt a gregarious tortoise named Kambugriva, eloquent yet plagued by an insatiable urge to speak. Beside the tranquil lake nested two magnificent wild geese of profound discernment, named Sankata and Vikata. Drawn together by mutual goodwill, their evening discussions upon ethics and celestial harmonies forged an unbroken brotherhood across seasons.
Yet the cosmic wheel turned, bringing a relentless twelve-year drought upon the province. The sky turned to molten brass, the meadows parched into ash, and the proud waters of Phullotpala steadily shrank into a suffocating basin of mud. Seeing fellow aquatic creatures perish daily, Sankata and Vikata scouted far across mountain ranges and discovered Shubhanga, a secluded glacial reservoir nestled deep within the Dandaka forest. Returning with heavy hearts, they confessed, 'Beloved brother, this lake has become a tomb. We must migrate across the skies, yet our spirits weep at leaving you behind.'
Kambugriva looked upon his slow, earthbound limbs with sorrow: 'My heavy shell anchors me to dust; without wings, I cannot survive the scorched barrens. Am I doomed to perish alone?' Reflecting deeply, the noble geese devised an extraordinary stratagem. Procuring a supple yet resilient bamboo reed, they instructed: 'Clamp your jaws upon the exact center of this stave with unwavering grip. We shall seize the outer ends with our beaks and soar into the upper currents. But hear our solemn vow: whatever sights you behold, whatever provocation arises, you must remain utterly mute. A single syllable will shatter your hold and seal your doom.'
Kambugriva pledged with fervent sincerity: 'O saviors of my life, do not doubt my restraint! I am not so reckless as to trade breath for chatter. My jaws shall remain locked as iron.' Seizing the reed, the geese unfurled their powerful wings, ascending into the golden thermals. As they sliced through the clouds, Kambugriva gazed down in sheer awe at miniature towns and serpent-like rivers glittering beneath them. Never had a creeping dweller of the mire experienced the majesty of the heavens. Presently, their flight path crossed above the bustling thoroughfares of an imperial city.
The bizarre spectacle of two great birds airlifting an armored reptile drew gasps from the streets. Citizens rushed to rooftops, pointing and shouting mockery: 'Look yonder! What madness flies above! If that clumsy beast slips, we shall feast upon roast shell tonight!' The rising tide of ridicule and insolent laughter struck at Kambugriva’s pride. Enflamed by indignation and wounded vanity, he forgot his sacred pact, his perilous altitude, and the wisdom of his mentors. Parting his jaws to spit retributive defiance—'Eat ash, you fools!'—his grip failed instantly.
The moment his jaws unclasped, gravity claimed him. Tumbling through the empty sky, Kambugriva struck the stone plaza below and was shattered beyond repair. Circling above with sorrowful shrieks, the geese lamented: 'Alas! He who scorns the prudent counsel of true well-wishers and cannot muzzle his own tongue becomes the architect of his own destruction.' This timeless tale warns us that intellect and noble allies cannot preserve one who lacks emotional discipline. Often in life, silence is not merely a virtue; it is the ultimate shield of survival.
