During the golden renaissance of the Vijayanagara Empire in Southern India, Emperor Krishnadevaraya’s court glittered with philosophers, artists, and statesmen. Foremost among his inner council was Tenali Ramakrishna—a man of razor-sharp wit, boundless humor, and a peerless genius for transforming perilous entanglements into effortless triumphs. Krishnadevaraya frequently subjected Tenali Rama’s intellect to rigorous tests, and Rama unfailingly emerged with dazzling, unorthodox solutions.

It was the height of midsummer. Tenali Rama’s residence lay on the quiet fringes of Hampi, bordered by a sprawling orchard of mango, guava, banana, and coconut palms. The scorching summer drought had lowered the water table, leaving the orchard severely parched. Rama had been contemplating for days how to recruit laborers to draw sufficient water from his deep irrigation well. One moonlit night, while taking his evening stroll along the terrace, his sharp eyes detected shadowy movements within the dense jasmine hedges.

Peering through the trellis, Rama observed four burly, armed burglars crouching in the shadows, whispering schemes to break into the mansion the moment the oil lamps were extinguished. An ordinary householder would have panicked, screamed for watchmen, or locked the gates in terror. But Tenali Rama smiled serenely into the darkness. Recognizing that violence was unnecessary when psychological artifice could be deployed, he saw an opportunity to solve two problems at once: neutralize the intruders and water his parched grove.

Sauntering inside with unhurried grace, Rama gestured silently to his wife Sharada to play along. Standing right beside the open veranda window that faced the hedges, Rama projected his voice with dramatic anxiety: 'Beloved wife! Have you heard the alarming reports from the bazaar? A ruthless gang of highwaymen has entered the capital, pillaging wealthy estates. It is folly to keep our ancestral gold coins, diamond chokers, and royal jewels inside the bedchamber. I have devised a foolproof sanctuary: we shall pack all our treasures into the great iron-banded chest and drop it to the bottom of our garden well! No thief would ever dream of searching under ten fathoms of water!' Huddled in the bushes, the burglars grinned in predatory ecstasy; fortune had delivered the riches directly to their hands!

Working swiftly in the courtyard, Rama and his wife loaded an immense iron-strapped timber chest with granite cobbles, broken mortar, and heavy paving bricks until the box weighed several hundredweights. Grunting and groaning with theatrical exertion, husband and wife dragged the massive chest across the lawn to the rim of the stone well. Murmuring prayers of thanksgiving for their cunning, Rama lowered the chest into the abyss; with a colossal splash, the heavy box plummeted to the muddy bottom. Rama dusted his hands, declared himself relieved, and extinguished the bedroom lanterns.

The moment silence cloaked the house, the four thieves emerged like shadows. Peering down the dark shaft, they spotted the submerged chest far beneath the water. The gang leader whispered: 'The iron chest is too massive to dredge through deep water. We must empty this well bucket by bucket until the water level drops to the mud!' Grabbing the well’s heavy copper buckets and rope windlasses, the burglars embarked upon backbreaking toil. One bucket, fifty buckets, five hundred buckets... They hoisted water with desperate fury, dumping the torrents into the irrigation channels that crisscrossed the orchard. Throughout the long midnight hours, the exhausted men hauled tons of water, unwittingly irrigating every parched mango root, lime tree, and banana grove on the estate. By the first pink blush of dawn, the well was pumped dry. Panting, blistered, and clutching their aching spines, the thieves hauled the chest to the grass and smashed the padlock with an iron crowbar. The lid creaked open. Horror froze their marrow: inside lay only jagged foundation stones and damp river silt! At that precise second, Tenali Rama strolled into the morning sunlight holding a bamboo cane, beaming with paternal warmth: 'A thousand blessings upon you, noble gentlemen! My aged back was too sore to operate the windlass, and my mangoes were withering under the drought. Your tireless midnight labour has watered my entire orchard without costing me a single copper coin! How may I reward such philanthropy? Shall I invite the royal constable to present your medals?' Realizing they had been thoroughly outwitted and utterly humiliated, the thieves dropped their tools and sprinted away toward the horizon, never to return to Hampi. The legendary exploit endures: he who keeps his wits sharp and his spirit unruffled can turn the darkest malice of adversaries into his greatest advantage.
