The Borrowed Telescope
The science club at Riverbend School had been saving for months to host a stargazing evening. A local astronomy group agreed to lend them a telescope, provided a trained volunteer supervised its setup and use. The students were excited; some had read about the Moon’s craters, while others had never looked through a telescope.
As soon as the sky darkened, several students crowded around the equipment and called out that they should be first. One student reached toward a knob to make the image sharper. The volunteer paused the group and explained that the telescope was shared equipment: a small careless movement could disturb its alignment. Only the trained adult would set it up and adjust it.
The club created a simple turn list. Each student had time to look, describe what they noticed, and step aside for the next person. A student who needed more time to find the eyepiece received help without being teased. Students could also ask the volunteer to describe the view if they could not see it clearly.
By the end of the evening, everyone had a chance to observe the Moon, and the telescope was returned in good condition. The club sent a thank-you note and recorded the care instructions for future borrowed equipment. The students learned that curiosity is not a race to be first. It works best when people protect shared tools, respect instructions, and make learning welcoming for others.
