The Credit on the Cover
For the school’s reading week, Ayaan designed a cover for his group’s book review. He remembered that Nisha had drawn a beautiful picture of a tree full of books, so he scanned it and placed it on the cover. In the rush to print, he added only his own name.
At the display, several visitors praised the illustration. Ayaan thanked them, but noticed that Nisha had become quiet. When he asked what was wrong, she replied, “I’m glad you liked my drawing, but you used it without asking, and everyone thinks you made it.”
Ayaan felt embarrassed. He could have argued that the picture was for a class project, but instead he listened. “You’re right. I should have asked and credited you,” he said. He checked whether Nisha was still comfortable with the drawing being used. She agreed, provided her name was added and the group explained who had written the review and who had created the art.
They corrected the cover and updated the display card. Ayaan also suggested that future projects include a short contribution list from the start. Nisha was not expected to treat the mistake as unimportant simply because Ayaan had not meant to upset her. The group learned that appreciation is more than saying “good job”: it means respecting permission, ownership, and credit so that everyone’s work is recognized honestly.
