बिना बताए आया मेहमान

शनिवार की दोपहर ऋतु का परिवार उसके बड़े भाई की प्रवेश-परीक्षा की तैयारी कर रहा था। शाम के लिए भोजन बनाकर रखा गया था और सबने पढ़ाई के लिए कुछ शांत घंटे तय किए थे। तभी ऋतु की मौसी अचानक आ गईं। वे शहर के दूसरे हिस्से से आई थीं और परिवार से मिलकर खुश थीं।

On Saturday afternoon, Ritu’s family was preparing for her older brother’s entrance exam. A pot of food had been made for the evening, and everyone had planned a quiet few hours for revision. Then Ritu’s aunt arrived unexpectedly. She had travelled from another part of town and was happy to see them.

ऋतु की माँ चाहती थीं कि मौसी का स्वागत हो, लेकिन वे जानती थीं कि उस समय बड़ा भोजन बनाना या पूरी दोपहर पढ़ाई की योजना छोड़ना संभव नहीं था। एक पल के लिए उन्हें लगा कि यह बात बताना रूखा लगेगा। फिर उन्होंने बहन का गर्मजोशी से स्वागत किया, चाय और फल दिए और ईमानदारी से कहा, “आप आईं, हमें अच्छा लगा। आज हमारे पास समय और तैयार भोजन सीमित है। क्या हम थोड़ी देर साथ बैठें और रविवार को लंबी मुलाकात का समय तय करें?”

Ritu’s mother wanted her to feel welcome, but she also knew the family could not prepare a large lunch or leave the study plan for the whole afternoon. For a moment, she worried that explaining this would sound rude. Then she greeted her sister warmly, offered tea and fruit, and said honestly, “We are glad you came. Today we have limited time and food ready, but can we sit together for a little while and plan a longer visit on Sunday?”

मौसी ने मेज़ पर फैली किताबें देखीं और बात समझ गईं। उन्होंने कहा कि आने से पहले फोन कर लेना चाहिए था और अभी चाय ही काफी है। दोनों ने थोड़ी देर बात की, फिर रविवार का समय तय किया ताकि परिवार आराम से भोजन तैयार कर सके और बिना जल्दबाज़ी के मुलाकात का आनंद ले सके।

The aunt looked around, saw the books spread on the table, and understood. She said she should have called first, and that tea was enough for now. They chatted briefly, then agreed on a time for Sunday when the family could prepare a proper meal and enjoy the visit without rushing.

बाद में ऋतु ने पूछा कि क्या अच्छे मेज़बान को मेहमान की हर बात मान लेनी चाहिए। माँ ने समझाया कि दयालुता का अर्थ दूसरे की परवाह करना है, न कि यह दिखावा करना कि समय, पैसा या ऊर्जा कभी सीमित नहीं होते। मौसी ने भी परिवार की परिस्थिति का सम्मान करके दयालुता दिखाई। मुलाकात अच्छी रही क्योंकि दोनों ने ईमानदारी से बात की और एक-दूसरे की सीमाएँ स्वीकार कीं। ऋतु ने सीखा कि सच्चे स्वागत और सम्मानजनक सीमा—दोनों का साथ होना संभव है।

Later, Ritu asked whether a good host should always say yes to a guest. Her mother explained that kindness means caring about another person, not pretending to have unlimited time, money, or energy. The aunt had shown kindness too by respecting the family’s situation. Their visit ended warmly because both people spoke honestly and accepted each other’s limits. Ritu learned that hospitality can include a sincere welcome and a respectful boundary at the same time.
