The Team That Changed the Rules
The class organized a relay game for sports day. Teams had to carry a soft ball around cones and pass it to the next player. When Ravi, who uses a wheelchair, looked at the narrow turns and loose mats, he said the route was not safe for him. One student quickly offered, “You can be our scorekeeper.” Ravi replied, “I’d like to play, not just watch.”
Their captain paused the game plan and asked Ravi what obstacles he saw and what might help. Ravi suggested widening the turns, taping down the mats, and placing checkpoints that every team member could reach. The teacher checked the space for safety, and the students tested the new route together. They adjusted the distance so the game stayed challenging without making speed the only skill that mattered.
On sports day, Ravi raced with his team, and everyone had to communicate, steer carefully, and time their passes. The result depended on teamwork, not on everyone moving in exactly the same way.
Afterward, the class discussed how easily a rule can exclude someone when it is designed around only one kind of body or ability. They also learned not to assume what a person needs: asking respectfully gave Ravi a voice in the solution. Inclusion was not a favour or a special prize. It was making the shared activity safe, fair, and genuinely open to everyone.
