"Care for family members with love, while planning responsibly and asking for help when needed."

Set against the sacred dawn of the Ramayana era in the peaceful woodlands flanking the Sarayu river lived Shravan Kumar, a youth of exceptional virtue, humility, and spiritual nobility. He dwelled in an austere thatched hermitage with his elderly parents, Shantanu and Gyanavati. Burdened by advanced age and frail health, both parents were also entirely deprived of eyesight. Far removed from the fleeting pursuits of worldly ambition, Shravan consecrated every heartbeat of his youth to their tender care. From dawn until the stars mounted the night sky, he anticipated their every physical comfort, treating filial duty as his supreme temple and devotion as his highest prayer.

Aware that the sand in their hourglass was running low, the blind parents one twilight voiced their lingering soul's longing with timid reluctance: 'Beloved son, though our eyes are shrouded in darkness, our souls yearn to feel the holy dust of the sacred shrines across Bharata before our breath leaves this mortal frame.' Being impoverished ascetics, Shravan possessed neither chariot nor pack animal, yet his heart harboured a resolve grander than mountains. Gathering resilient bamboo poles and wild hemp rope from the groves, he fashioned a sturdy carrying yoke (kanwar). Placing each frail parent upon a cushioned wicker seat on either end, he hoisted the crushing load upon his youthful shoulders and embarked on foot across rugged mountain passes and sun-scorched highways.

One warm summer twilight, the pilgrims entered the dense riparian forests bordering the ancient kingdom of Ayodhya. Hundreds of miles of unbroken marching had blistered Shravan's soles and bruised his collarbones, yet his countenance glowed with unmarred serenity. From the wicker basket, his father whispered through parched lips: 'Dearest child, our throats burn with agonizing thirst; our strength is failing. If you could fetch a sip of cool river water, our fainting spirits may be revived.' Lowering the kanwar with meticulous tenderness beneath a spreading banyan, Shravan bowed before his parents, took up his brass water vessel, and hurried down the forested bank toward the flowing waters of the Sarayu.

At that very hour, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya was hunting big game in the deep reserve. Dasharatha was the peerless master of the Shabdabhedi Bana—the legendary archery science of striking an invisible target guided solely by acoustic vibration. Concealed within a thicket of reeds with his heavy bow bent, the king waited in the gloom. As Shravan submerged his urn into the water, the vessel emitted a rhythmic, hollow gurgle ('ghat-ghat') through the nocturnal silence. Convinced that a rogue wild elephant was drinking at the water's edge, Dasharatha loosed his lethal shaft blindly into the dark.

Hissing through the foliage, the iron-barbed missile struck home, tearing through the noble youth's chest. A piercing, agonized human cry shattered the wilderness: 'Alas! Who now shall bring water to my aged, blind parents awaiting my return?' Recognizing human speech, the king’s blood turned cold. Parting the rushes, Dasharatha stumbled upon the shore, horrified to discover a gentle ascetic writhing in a pool of expanding crimson. Dropping his bow in utter despair, the monarch knelt beside the fallen youth, weeping: 'O holy soul! What catastrophic madness has my blind hand wrought? Forgive me!'

Even as the shadows of death closed upon his vision, Shravan gave no thought to his own agonizing mortality. His failing consciousness remained anchored solely in the welfare of his parched parents. Clasping the weeping monarch's hand, he whispered with his ebbing breath: 'Sire, my destiny is fulfilled; grieve not for my passing. Beneath yonder banyan tree, my aged, blind parents await my footsteps; their throats are parched with feverish thirst. Take this vessel of fresh water and speed to their side. Revive them, I implore thee; but reveal not my slaughter abruptly, lest their tender hearts burst in that very instant.' With those sublime words, the pure soul departed the mortal frame. Bearing the urn in trembling hands, Dasharatha brought the water to the banyan grove. Sensing a strange tread, the parents demanded the truth, and learning of their son’s untimely demise, their hearts shattered; they perished upon the forest floor, uttering the fateful prophecy that Dasharatha too would one day die of grief for his son. Shravan Kumar’s supreme sacrifice remains eternally inscribed upon the soul of humanity as the pinnacle of selfless, filial love.
