Raja Harishchandra
Upon the resplendent throne of Ayodhya sat King Harishchandra, an illustrious monarch of the Solar dynasty. Under his righteous reign, justice, righteousness, and truth flourished so profoundly that wolves and lambs drank peacefully from the same streams. Harishchandra was governed by an unbreakable code: though the sun might rise in the west and mountains crumble into dust, a word once uttered from his lips would never prove false. His noble consort, Queen Taramati, and his young son, Rohitashva, were embodiments of virtue. The renown of his unwavering integrity echoed across the heavens, stirring awe even in Indra’s celestial court.
To test whether this commitment to truth was mere courtly rhetoric or an indestructible soul-force, the formidable Sage Vishwamitra engineered an extraordinary trial. One night, Harishchandra dreamt that he had bestowed his entire kingdom, its treasury, armies, and lands upon Vishwamitra as an offering. The following morning, as the king held court, Vishwamitra strode into the palace. Harishchandra arose, prostrated before the sage, and honoring the dream promise as an inviolable sacred reality, placed his crown and royal scepter at the sage’s feet. Vishwamitra accepted the empire, but demanded: 'Thou hast surrendered the land, O King; but where is the traditional dakshina of one thousand gold mohurs to sanctify the gift?'
Having renounced the royal treasury, Harishchandra possessed only the coarse garments upon his back. To fulfill the debt, he journeyed on foot to the holy city of Kashi accompanied by Taramati and Rohitashva. As the deadline for the dakshina approached with no coins in hand, the king made the supreme personal sacrifice: with tears streaming down his cheeks, he sold Queen Taramati and little Rohitashva into domestic servitude to a wealthy merchant. Yet the proceeds fell short. In the final hour, Harishchandra sold his own freedom to Kallu, the keeper of the Manikarnika cremation grounds. Stripped of royalty and status, the emperor assumed the grueling chore of tending funeral pyres and collecting the shroud levy from mourning relatives.
Day and night, amidst the bitter smoke of burning pyres and wailing mourners, Harishchandra discharged his duties with scrupulous honesty. His once-regal frame grew gaunt, his hair matted, and his limbs smeared with cremation ash. Meanwhile, Queen Taramati scrubbed floors as a domestic drudge, while young Rohitashva gathered flowers for their master's rituals. One tragic twilight, while plucking blossoms in a damp garden, a venomous serpent bit the tender prince. Within moments, the child collapsed lifeless into the grass. When the news reached the desolate mother, her universe collapsed into boundless darkness.
Through a torrential midnight tempest, amidst lightning and howling winds, the destitute queen bore the cold body of her son to the Manikarnika burning ghats. She lacked even a single copper coin to purchase a burial shroud. As lightning split the black sky, Harishchandra stepped forward to challenge the mourner. In the sudden flash, he recognized his beloved queen and the lifeless face of his only child. A shattered cry of paternal agony tore from his throat. Weeping inconsolably, the royal couple embraced across the dead prince. Taramati sobbed: 'My lord, the light of our house is extinguished! Consign our child to the holy flames!' Yet even in this darkest abyss of grief, Harishchandra’s moral compass did not waver: 'Beloved, I am a bonded servant of this ground. To permit a cremation without the mandatory tax is treason to my master and a betrayal of truth. You must render the shroud tax.'
Weeping, Taramati cried: 'Lord, I possess nothing in this wide world save this solitary, ragged saree covering my body!' Steeling his soul against the unbearable agony of love, Harishchandra replied: 'Then tear half of thy garment and render it as the shroud tax, so that truth may remain unstained.' As Taramati grasped the hem of her cloth to tear it, the thunderclouds parted and celestial music resonated through the heavens. Fragrant flowers rained upon the ghat as Lord Vishnu, King Indra, and Sage Vishwamitra materialized in radiant splendour. Vishwamitra held Harishchandra's hands: 'Hold, sublime Emperor! In all the three worlds, there is none whose devotion to truth rivals thine. This ordeal was a divine test, and thou hast emerged like pure gold refined in the hottest furnace.' At the divine touch, little Rohitashva opened his eyes, breathing with renewed life. Vishwamitra restored the empire of Ayodhya with grand blessings. The legend of Raja Harishchandra stands through the corridors of time as an unshakable beacon: he who holds fast to truth in the deepest shadows of despair earns an eternal crown that outlasts the cosmos.
