The Bamboo in the Wind
Raman cared for a community garden behind the library. To shield the young plants from heavy rain, he built a frame from stiff pieces of wood. He fastened every joint tightly because he wanted the structure to remain perfectly still. Nearby, he used bamboo canes to support a row of climbing beans.
One night, a storm swept through the town. In the morning, Raman found that several parts of the wooden frame had cracked. The bamboo canes had bent with the wind, but most were still standing. Raman was puzzled. He had believed the stiff frame would be stronger than the bending bamboo.
A carpenter who helped maintain the garden explained that a structure needs both strength and the ability to handle movement. Some joints needed reinforcement; other parts needed room to flex. Together, they repaired the frame with better joints and used flexible bamboo where appropriate. They also moved the most delicate pots away from the windiest corner.
When the next storm came, the new frame moved slightly but did not collapse. Raman understood that flexibility was not the same as carelessness, and strength did not mean refusing to move. The garden needed solid foundations, thoughtful design, and the ability to respond to changing conditions.
Later, Raman used the lesson when the garden’s watering schedule changed. Instead of insisting that the old routine must remain exactly as it was, he listened to the volunteers and made a new plan that still protected the plants. He learned that resilience means holding on to what matters while being willing to change the method.
