The Shortcut Through the Garden
Every Thursday, Meera’s class carried their science notebooks from the main building to the garden laboratory. The proper path curved around the flowerbeds and took about a minute longer. One morning, a few students stepped directly through the garden. Others followed because it looked faster.
By the end of the week, several young plants had bent underfoot, and a muddy trail crossed the bed. The gardener, Mr. Joseph, had to spend extra time repairing the soil. When the students heard this, some shrugged. “We all used the shortcut,” one said.
Their teacher asked a different question: “Who benefited, and who carried the cost?” The students realised they had saved a little time for themselves while damaging something that everyone shared. They apologised to Mr. Joseph and asked what would genuinely help. Under his guidance, they gently firmed the soil around surviving plants, cleared the path, and placed simple signs beside the beds.
The class also suggested a practical improvement: a stepping-stone route around the garden that would be easy to follow even when students were in a hurry. The school approved the plan.
The plants needed time to recover, and not every damaged one survived. The students continued watering and caring for the area without expecting instant results. They learned that a shortcut is not truly efficient when it shifts hidden costs onto others or harms something held in common.
