The Fox and the Stork
Along the lush marshes bordering the ancient Vindhya forest roamed Lomasha, a cunning and narcissistic fox who derived perverse satisfaction from humiliating gentler creatures. He prided himself upon playing cruel practical jokes, mistaking heartless trickery for intellectual brilliance. Inhabiting the quiet reeds nearby was Dirghachanchu, an elegant, gentle, and dignified stork known for his serene nature. His statuesque white plumage, long stilt-like legs, and slender, spear-like beak made him an emblem of grace. For weeks, the fox had schemed to contrive an embarrassing spectacle at the noble bird’s expense.
One golden evening, adopting a voice coated in artificial sweetness, the fox approached the stork at the water’s edge: 'My esteemed neighbor Dirghachanchu! We share the same wetlands, yet our homes remain strangers. This evening, I have prepared an aromatic, herb-infused soup of royal quality. Honor my humble hearth by dining with me as my distinguished guest!' Being of pure heart and unacquainted with duplicity, the stork bowed gratefully, accepting the invitation with unreserved warmth.
At dusk, when the stork arrived at the fox's den, Lomasha greeted him with theatrical bows. But when the meal was unveiled, the malicious nature of the trap became instantly apparent. Rather than serving the broth in deep bowls, the fox poured the steaming, thin liquid into two wide, utterly flat ceramic platters. The shallow soup spread in a microscopic film across the porcelain surface. Beaming with fake cordiality, the host announced: 'Fall to, dearest friend! Do not permit this celestial soup to cool!'
Crouching over his platter, the fox deployed his broad, flat tongue, lapping up the soup in rhythmic, greedy gulps, cleaning the surface within moments. But the plight of the guest was heartbreaking. Possessing a long, slender beak designed for spearing fish in deep pools, the stork could only peck fruitlessly against the flat porcelain with a hollow clicking sound. Not a solitary drop could enter his throat. Watching the bird’s helpless embarrassment, the fox mocked him with feigned concern: 'Why, brother stork! Do you despise my cooking? Why do you neglect your bowl?' Suppressing his hunger and wounded dignity, the stork maintained sovereign composure: 'Thank you, kind host. The aroma was splendid; my digestion is merely delicate tonight.' Bowing politely, the stork departed hungry into the night.
A week later, the stork approached the fox with impeccable courtesy: 'Brother Lomasha, your hospitality left an indelible impression upon my heart. Allow me the privilege of reciprocating: dine with me tomorrow evening at my nest beside the reeds.' Anticipating a free feast and convinced the naive bird lacked the intelligence to perceive his former trick, the greedy fox accepted immediately. To maximize his gluttony, the fox starved himself throughout the following day, arriving at twilight with an empty belly and watering jaws.
The stork ushered the fox into his bower, where an intoxicating aroma of simmering game stew filled the air. But as the banquet was presented, the fox froze in stunned mortification. The stew was served inside two tall, narrow-necked ceramic amphorae with slender spouts scarcely wider than a coin. With natural ease, the stork slipped his long, graceful beak down the narrow neck of his vessel, extracting succulent morsels and savoring the hot broth. The fox, however, possessed a broad, whiskered snout; thrusting his face against the opening, his nose was firmly blocked by the porcelain rim. Straining frantically, he could do nothing more than lick the exterior glaze, while his stomach growled in agonizing hunger. Finishing his meal to the last drop, the stork raised his eyes and remarked with tranquil irony: 'Brother Lomasha, why do you hesitate? Do you find my culinary skill lacking? Eat heartily, for I have merely patterned my hospitality upon the identical standard you established for me!' The crushing retribution pierced the fox’s arrogant soul. Scorched by shame and hollowed by hunger, the humiliated predator could not utter a syllable. Dropping his ears, he slunk away into the shadows of the forest, permanently cured of his mocking cruelty. The immortal Aesopian fable speaks across the corridors of time: 'As you sow, so shall you reap.' Treat every soul with the tender consideration, dignity, and empathy you desire for yourself, for the wheel of fate unfailingly serves back to the cruel the bitter broth of their own creation.
