"Impatience and greed can destroy a valuable source of well-being."

Nestled amidst the lush, rolling hills of Manipur lived Devadatta, a humble tenant farmer, and his wife Subhadra. Despite decades of unsparing toil, their home was shrouded in chronic poverty. Their sole possessions were a rickety thatched cottage and a modest coop of poultry. One twilight at the weekly rural fair, Devadatta purchased a peculiar white goose from an itinerant wandering ascetic. Handing over the bird, the monk remarked cryptically: 'Honour nature's bounty with reverent gratitude, my son, for the fires of greed are never quenched.' Devadatta brought the bird home, installing it in a cozy straw coop within his courtyard.

At the break of dawn, Devadatta stepped outside with a bowl of millet to tend the coop. Lifting the wicker gate, a blinding yellow gleam caught his eye. Resting in the dry straw was an egg of astonishing weight and luster. When he picked it up, his fingers trembled in disbelief—it was no ordinary eggshell, but a solid mass of 24-karat pure gold. Calling his wife in breathless wonder, they rushed to the capital's royal goldsmith, who verified that the egg was untarnished, flawless gold of immense worth.

This was no solitary anomaly of nature. Every single dawn, with astronomical precision, the wondrous bird deposited another shimmering golden egg upon the straw. Selling the daily treasure to merchants, Devadatta’s fortunes transformed dramatically. Within six months, the dilapidated hut was replaced by an opulent two-story stone mansion, liveried servants attended their hearth, and Devadatta draped himself in Varanasi silks. The entire district marvelled at the miraculous turn in his fortunes.

Yet human desire possesses a bottomless appetite: the more it consumes, the more voraciously it hungers. Prosperity bred an incurable impatience in their souls; the daily miracle of a single golden egg began to feel intolerably meager. One midnight, lounging upon velvet bolsters, Subhadra whispered into her husband's ear: 'Husband, why should we endure the petty drip of a single egg every twenty-four hours? This bird is no normal animal. Within its belly must reside an inexhaustible mountain of molten gold, an alchemical furnace producing these treasures. If we slice open its abdomen tonight, we shall seize the entire treasury in one fell swoop, making us wealthier than the Emperor himself!'

Greed cast a suffocating veil over Devadatta’s intellect. The monk’s parting warning evaporated from his memory; gratitude toward the silent creature that had lifted him from starvation to majesty dissolved like smoke. Seizing a razor-sharp butcher’s cleaver from the pantry, he crept into the coop. The innocent goose, recognizing her master, tilted her head with trusting affection. But with cold-blooded savagery, Devadatta pinned the bird to the flagstones and severed its belly with one ruthless stroke.

Horror and revulsion froze their breath. As the entrails spilled onto the straw, there was no mountain of gold, no alchemical furnace. Its internal anatomy was identical to any ordinary fowl—flesh, viscera, and partially digested grain. Not a single microscopic fleck of gold was to be found. The divine bird gave a final shudder and lay dead in the dust. Devadatta and his wife stood with gore-stained hands, staring at the lifeless corpse of the blessing that had showered them with daily riches. They collapsed in tears of futile remorse, but life once extinguished does not return. With the golden wellspring destroyed, their fortune withered under vanity and mismanagement within years, casting them back into bitter destitution. The timeless parable warns that he who despises patience and strangles the source of steady blessings out of rabid greed invariably plunges himself into ruin.
