जिस रात बिजली चली गई

एक शाम रिया के मोहल्ले में तेज़ तूफ़ान आया और सब कुछ अंधेरे में डूब गया। निवासियों के ग्रुप में तुरंत संदेशों की बाढ़ आ गई — किसी ने लिखा, "तीन दिन तक बिजली नहीं आएगी।" किसी ने कहा, "पानी की टंकी खाली हो जाएगी।" किसी ने कहा, "सड़क पर पेड़ गिरा है, बाहर मत जाओ।" रिया ने देखा कि उसके माता-पिता शांत बैठे थे। उन्होंने ग्रुप के संदेश पढ़े, पर आगे नहीं भेजे।

One evening a fierce storm swept through Riya's neighbourhood and everything went dark. Messages flooded the residents' group immediately — someone wrote "Power will be out for three days." Another said, "The water tank will run dry." A third claimed, "A tree has fallen on the road, don't go outside." Riya noticed her parents sitting calmly. They read the group messages but did not forward a single one.

Riya's father explained, "When something big happens, first check where the information comes from." Her mother opened the electricity board's official website — it said power was likely to return in four to five hours, not three days. Her father looked out along the lane — no tree had fallen on the road, only a large branch that could be cleared. "Forwarding something without checking can be like spreading a lie," her father said quietly.

अपने घर में सबको सुरक्षित जान लेने के बाद परिवार ने अकेले रहने वाले बुज़ुर्ग पड़ोसी काका को फोन किया। काका की आवाज़ थोड़ी घबराई हुई थी — अँधेरे में उन्हें चलने में डर लग रहा था। रिया की माँ एक मोमबत्ती और टॉर्च लेकर काका के घर गईं। वहाँ पहुँचकर उन्होंने देखा कि काका के पास मोमबत्ती तो थी पर माचिस नहीं थी। माँ ने माचिस दी, और काका के कमरे में रोशनी करके उनसे कुछ देर बातें की — सिर्फ इसलिए कि वे अकेलापन महसूस न करें।

After making sure everyone in their own home was safe, the family called their elderly neighbour Kaka, who lived alone. His voice sounded a little frightened — the darkness made it hard for him to move around safely. Riya's mother went to Kaka's home carrying a candle and a torch. When she arrived, she found that Kaka had candles but no matchbox. She gave him matches, lit his room, and sat with him for a while — simply so he would not feel alone.

In the neighbourhood group, one resident wrote that his phone battery was nearly dead and he needed to make an urgent call. Riya's father had a power bank. He invited the neighbour over and let him charge his phone for ten minutes. After that, Riya herself suggested, "Papa, we should always keep a small emergency list at home — torch, matches, power bank, water." Her father smiled. "Absolutely right — and let's make one right now."

उस रात बाद में बिजली वापस आ गई। जो अफ़वाह तीन दिन बिजली न आने की थी, वह गलत निकली। अगले दिन रिया ने स्कूल में अपनी दोस्त को बताया कि तूफ़ान की रात उसके परिवार ने क्या किया। दोस्त ने कहा, "तुम्हारे माता-पिता ने घबराए नहीं?" रिया ने कहा, "नहीं। उन्होंने पहले जाँचा, फिर काम किया।" दोस्त ने सोचा और कहा, "मेरे घर में तो सब घबराकर गलत संदेश आगे भेज रहे थे।"

The power came back later that night. The rumour about three days without electricity turned out to be completely false. The next day, Riya told her friend at school what her family had done during the storm. Her friend asked, "Your parents didn't panic?" Riya said, "No. They checked first, then acted." Her friend thought for a moment and said, "At my house, everyone panicked and kept forwarding wrong messages."

From that experience, several families in the neighbourhood decided together to prepare a small emergency list for every home. It included: candles and matches, a torch with fresh batteries, a power bank, a small bottle of water, and the electricity board's real helpline number. Riya now understood that being prepared did not mean being afraid — it meant staying calm, checking what was true, and being ready to help others when it mattered.
