The Cap Seller and the Monkeys
Across the rustic hamlets of historical Awadh roamed Ramu, a diligent, honest, and good-natured itinerant vendor of handcrafted caps. He sourced brilliantly dyed velvet caps—crimson, saffron, emerald, and azure—from master weavers, carefully arranging them in a stout wicker hamper. Balancing this substantial load upon his head, he traversed miles of dusty country roads to supply rural fairs and village squares. Though arduous, his honest commerce yielded sufficient bread and a heart untroubled by debt.
One midsummer afternoon, when the sun blazed like molten brass and the scorching loo wind swept the plains, Ramu found his strength utterly spent after walking between three distant hamlets. His limbs trembled with fatigue, and sweat soaked through his cotton tunic. Spotting a centuries-old banyan tree whose sprawling canopy cast a vast, cool pavilion of shadow, he sighed with boundless relief. Lowering the heavy hamper beside the massive trunk, he folded his towel as a pillow and stretched out upon the lush clover. Soothed by the gentle rustle of leaves, he drifted into deep, unbothered slumber.
What Ramu did not suspect was that the upper tiers of the banyan were home to a boisterous, mischievous troop of wild macaque monkeys. As rhythmic snores arose from the sleeping vendor, the curious primates peered through the leaves. Creeping down the aerial roots, the alpha male inspected the resting traveler and the wicker hamper. Sniffing the latch, he pried open the lid. The dazzling array of bright silks fascinated his primal eyes. Snatching a bright red velvet cap, he awkwardly placed it upon his head, mimicking the headgear he had observed upon the slumbering man.
Emboldened by their leader's fashion, the rest of the troop swarmed down the branches in a rustling cascade. Chattering gleefully, each monkey plunged its paws into the basket, snatching green, yellow, and blue caps, strapping them onto their ears and brows. Within five minutes, the entire inventory was cleaned out. Fifty capped monkeys ascended back into the leafy heights, screeching with raucous vanity and admiring their vibrant new attire.
Two hours later, refreshed by the cool shade, Ramu stretched his arms and awoke. Reaching out to shoulder his hamper, he froze in sheer terror. The wicker lid lay overturned upon the grass, and the hamper was completely barren! A cold dread seized his stomach: 'Heavens! My entire investment, my family’s livelihood, has vanished! What thief stalked this solitary grove?' A chorus of high-pitched chatter and clicking teeth drew his eyes upward. The spectacle made his senses reel: every bough of the banyan was festooned with capped monkeys, chattering and preening in their purloined finery.
Desperate, Ramu folded his hands and pleaded: 'O monkey kings, return my wares, or my children will starve!' The primates merely bared their teeth and scratched their ribs. Enraged, Ramu scooped up pebbles and hurled them toward the branches. In instantaneous retaliation, fifty monkeys snapped off hard wild figs and pelted the vendor with painful accuracy. Bruised and seated in the dirt, a spark of insight suddenly pierced his despair: 'Monkeys are instinctual mimics! They do not possess original malice; they merely copy whatever they witness.' Resolving upon a psychological gamble, Ramu sprang up with theatrical drama. Looking straight at the watching troop, he scowled, stamped his foot, ripped his own cap from his head, and slammed it furiously into the dust. The primal instinct of imitation was instantaneous and irresistible. Without a single moment’s thought, every monkey pulled the cap from its head and flung it forcefully to the ground. A vibrant rainbow of fifty caps showered onto the turf. Wasting not a heartbeat, Ramu scooped up the fallen merchandise, packed his hamper, latched the lock, and strode briskly down the road with a triumphant smile. The timeless tale demonstrates that when confronted by impossible deadlocks, calm psychological insight and resourceful wit solve crises that force and fury only worsen.
