The Farmer and the Bundle of Sticks
Upon the fertile plains of Kaushambi lived Dharmapala, a venerable and industrious patriarch revered for his wisdom and unblemished integrity. Through sixty years of relentless toil, he had transformed rocky wasteland into thriving wheat fields, lush mango groves, and abundant granaries. He was father to four sons—Soma, Deva, Bhanu, and Jaya. All four were robust of stature, physically formidable, and sharp of intellect. Neighbors deemed Dharmapala exceptionally blessed to possess such heirs. Yet deep within the old farmer’s heart burned an agonizing sorrow that robbed his sunset years of all peace.
The source of his grief was the absolute absence of harmony, affection, and mutual respect among his sons. Trivial disputes—the allocation of canal water, the care of plough-oxen, or precedence at the meal table—instantly degenerated into venomous insults and brawls. Blinded by pride, none would brook the slightest concession. Crafty and envious neighbours observed this widening fissure with predatory delight, scheming to exploit their fratricidal rivalry and seize the ancestral lands the moment the patriarch closed his eyes. Dharmapala knew with dreadful certainty that discord would reduce his life’s work to ashes.
As his eightieth winter drew near, Dharmapala’s strength waned, and he was confined to his sickbed. Sensing that his final hour approached, he resolved that mere verbal admonitions were futile; he needed an unforgettable, living demonstration that would etch itself indelibly upon his sons' consciousness. Summoning Jaya, his youngest, he commanded: 'Go into the sal groves and fetch twenty straight, seasoned staves of equal thickness.' Jaya complied, returning with a bundle of stout oak-hard boughs. Dharmapala then bound the twenty staves together with heavy hemp cord, securing them into a tight, immovable cylindrical bundle.
Gathering the four brothers around his pallet, Dharmapala addressed his firstborn: 'Soma, you are the eldest and possess the strength of an ox. Take this bundle in both hands and break it across your knee.' Smirking with self-assurance, Soma gripped the parcel. Straining with volcanic force, his sinews bulged, his knuckles whitened, and veins throbbed against his temples; yet the rigid bundle did not yield by a fraction of an inch. Deva, Bhanu, and Jaya stepped forward in turn, exhausting their youthful vigor, but none could fracture or bend the bound wood. Panting in defeat, they protested: 'Father, this task is impossible. No mortal frame can shatter these staves while they remain bound together!'
A serene, profound smile illuminated the dying patriarch's weathered face. 'Very well,' he whispered softly. 'Now untie the cords.' As the rawhide knot was slipped, the bundle dissolved into twenty loose sticks upon the flagstones. Handing a single stave to each son, Dharmapala commanded: 'Now, break what you hold.' With effortless ease, each brother snapped his stick across his knee with a sharp crack. Within seconds, all twenty staves lay splintered in the dust. A heavy, reflective silence descended upon the bedchamber.
Dharmapala raised his trembling hands, tears of paternal love glistening upon his cheeks: 'Behold, my sons! Inscribe this sacred lesson upon your hearts. While those staves were bound in unison, the combined physical might of four strapping youths could not fracture a single splinter. But the instant the cord was severed, even a child’s wrist could snap them like dry straw. Exactly thus is your destiny. So long as you four stand shoulder-to-shoulder in fraternal love, mutual respect, and indivisible unity, no adversary on earth, no storm of misfortune, can undermine your household. But the day you fracture into solitary factions, the world will devour you one by one like brittle twigs.' The profound truth struck home like a lightning bolt. Overcome with shame and grief, the brothers wept, embracing one another across their father's bed and vowing unbroken brotherhood. The ancient lesson remains eternally triumphant: where unity dwells, invincibility reigns.
