"Honesty matters even when dishonesty could bring a quick reward."

In a riverside hamlet along the banks of the Sarayu lived Gangadhar, an impoverished woodcutter who tended to his elderly mother and young children. Inheriting neither fertile land nor silver coins, his entire existence hinged upon a single rusted iron axe and the honest sweat of his brow. Every dawn he ventured deep into the woodland, taking scrupulous care to gather only dead limbs so that living trees remained uninjured. The meager coins earned from selling firewood at the town bazaar kept hunger from his hearth. Despite grinding poverty, Gangadhar’s heart remained anchored in unshakeable truthfulness.

One sweltering morning, Gangadhar climbed onto a sturdy withered neem bough that arched directly over the churning currents of the river. Heat radiated from the earth and sweat drenched his palms. As he struck a forceful blow against the dry wood, the haft slipped from his glistening fingers; with a heavy splash, his sole tool plunged into the swirling depths. Paralyzed with horror, Gangadhar scrambled down the trunk and stared into the dark waters, but the torrential current was far too deep and swift for any mortal diver.

Collapsing upon the damp shingle, Gangadhar buried his face in his calloused hands and wept bitter tears. 'O Lord of Providence!' he cried into the wind. 'That axe was no mere scrap of iron; it was bread for my famished children and medicine for my ailing mother! With what face shall I return home to their waiting eyes?' The pure lamentation of a righteous man stirred the river. The turbulent whirlpools smoothed into mirror-like stillness, and amidst an ethereal luminescence emerged the River Deity, radiant and benevolent.

The deity addressed him with deep compassion: 'Grieve not, honest labourer. Why do your tears salt these sacred waters?' Folding his hands reverently, Gangadhar recounted the loss of his livelihood. Smiling, the divine spirit sank beneath the waves, re-emerging moments later holding an axe of solid gold that dazzled like the midday sun. Offering it forward, the deity asked, 'Is this the tool you lost, my son?' The golden axe was worth a king's ransom, enough to purchase estates for generations; yet Gangadhar shook his head humbly: 'Alas, divine lord, this wondrous gold does not belong to me. I am merely a poor woodsman; I cannot claim what is not mine.'

Testing his virtue further, the deity submerged once more, surfacing with an axe crafted of pure, shimmering silver. 'Is this then your lost treasure?' Gangadhar bowed low and replied without hesitation: 'Lord, neither is this silver axe mine. My tool was of humble iron, shaped only for chopping firewood.' A radiant smile graced the immortal's countenance. Diving a third time, the deity brought forth the scarred, rusted iron axe with its water-soaked ashwood handle. At that sight, Gangadhar cried out with pure joy: 'Yes, O Merciful One! That is indeed mine! That is the honest tool by which I earn our daily bread!'

The River Deity was profoundly moved by the man’s incorruptible conscience, unwavering contentment, and absolute detachment from greed. Raising a hand in blessing, the deity proclaimed: 'Blessed art thou, noble soul! In an age where men barter their honour for copper coins, you spurned mountains of gold and silver to remain faithful to truth. Your integrity is an unquenchable beacon for all humanity. Keep your honest iron axe, and receive both the gold and silver axes as heaven’s token for your virtue.' Enriched beyond measure, Gangadhar lived a life of boundless philanthropy, his name celebrated for generations. The classic truth stands eternal: righteousness yields treasures that time can never tarnish.
