The Swan and the Owl
Nestled amidst the glacial peaks of the Himalayas, the tranquil waters of Lake Manasarovar glistened with blooming white lotuses. In this sacred paradise dwelled Vimalamati, a magnificent royal swan of pristine plumage and graceful composure. His feathers mirrored fresh-fallen snow, and his regal demeanour commanded universal admiration. Nourished by tender lotus tubers and pristine mountain springs, his days passed in quiet contemplation. One autumn morning, drifting south over forested foothills in search of sweet reed roots, he alighted upon the branch of a sprawling banyan tree to rest his wings.
Within a shadowy cavity of the same ancient trunk dwelled Kruralochana, a solitary owl. Beholding the luminous aura and snow-white plumage of the swan, an envious curiosity stirred in the nocturnal bird's breast. Creeping from his gloomy hollow, the owl bowed deferentially: 'O celestial wanderer of the heavens! The mere sight of your dazzling grace sanctifies this shadowed wilderness. Would a prince of the skies deign to grant the treasure of companionship to a humble hermit of the night?' Though the swan noted the owl’s harsh talons and unblinking stare, the intoxicating honey of unearned flattery dulled his discernment, and he graciously accepted the overture.
The owl persistently implored the swan not to return to the alpine lakes, but rather to spend the night as his honoured guest. Suppressing a quiet instinct of caution, the swan rationalized that a single night’s lodging posed no danger. As dusk dissolved into heavy twilight, the full moon climbed the sky. The contrast was stark: the swan was an emblem of celestial purity, luminescence, and serene contemplation; the owl was a harbinger of nocturnal predation and ill omens. They shared no philosophical kinship, yet vanity and false hospitality had tethered their fates upon the very same branch.
In the stillness of midnight, a fatigued hunter trudged beneath the canopy. Embittered and famished after a fruitless hunt, shivering against the biting cold, he decided to bivouac at the roots of the massive banyan. He unstrung his bow, leaned his quiver against the bark, and settled into uneasy slumber. At that very instant, the owl peered downward, gripped by an uncontrollable impulse of wicked mischief. Opening his curved beak, he unleashed a bloodcurdling, screeching hoot that echoed across the dark forest like the shrieking laughter of an apparition.
Jolted from his rest by the hideous screech, the superstitious hunter burned with furious resentment: 'This wretched harbinger of death curses my sleep! I shall extinguish its vile breath this very hour!' Snatching his bow and notching a barbed shaft, he peered intently into the leafy branches above, seeking the source of the cry. The wily owl, knowing intimately the fatal consequences of his discordant screech, immediately slipped backward into the pitch-black safety of his deep cavity, caring not a whit for the companion he had left behind in the open air.
Sitting upon the open bough, the innocent swan remained serene and motionless. But the brilliant moonlight caught his immaculate white feathers, illuminating him against the dark leaves like a beacon. Spotting the luminous target, the hunter assumed this was the creature that had shrieked into the night. Drawing his bowstring to his ear, he loosed a razor-tipped shaft. The missile struck straight through the swan's noble breast. With a muted, sorrowful gasp, the majestic bird tumbled to the roots below, breathing his last in the cold dust. In his dying consciousness, he recognized the tragic truth: the sweet flattery of an incompatible companion invariably exacts the ultimate price from the innocent. The parable stands as an eternal beacon: never let unearned compliments blind discernment, nor keep company with natures alien to righteousness.
