"Wisdom means understanding the purpose of a task, not merely following its most obvious form."

High amidst the snow-crowned summits of the Himalayas stood holy Mount Kailash, the celestial abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Within this sanctuary reigned transcendental stillness, cosmic compassion, and divine grace. One morning, the wandering celestial sage Narada arrived strumming his tambura, singing praises of the Divine. In his hands rested an extraordinary fruit glowing with golden luminescence—the sacred 'Pala of Transcendent Wisdom', consecrated by Lord Brahma himself. Offering it to Shiva, Narada bowed: 'O Mahadeva! Whosoever consumes this miraculous fruit shall become the repository of boundless intellect, unshakeable discernment, and cosmic illumination.'

Goddess Parvati wished to bestow the blessing upon her two sons—Skanda (Kartikeya) and Lambodara (Ganesha). However, Narada cautioned that cutting or dividing the divine fruit would destroy its celestial potency; it had to be consumed whole by a single recipient. Kartikeya, the valiant commander-in-chief of the celestial hosts, was swift, athletic, and warrior-spirited. Ganesha was the repository of profound contemplation, auspiciousness, and spiritual discernment. Both youths eagerly claimed the treasure. To resolve the sibling rivalry with fairness, Lord Shiva proposed a sacred contest.

Addressing his sons, Shiva decreed: 'Beloved children, both of you are equally dear to our hearts. Therefore, let cosmic virtue decide. Whoever circumambulates the entire universe three times and returns first to the peak of Kailash shall receive this fruit of supreme wisdom.' The moment the decree was uttered, Kartikeya’s athletic spirit surged. Leaping onto his magnificent celestial peacock, the warrior-god shot skyward like a blazing comet. With wings flashing rainbow light, the peacock soared across planetary spheres, continents, and oceans at the speed of thought.

Meanwhile, Ganesha remained stationary upon the snowy terrace. His large, graceful frame and his humble mount, the gentle field mouse, could never contest the supersonic velocity of a celestial peacock. In a contest of physical speed, victory was an utter impossibility. Yet where physical velocity meets its boundary, the boundless realm of spiritual insight begins. Closing his eyes in silent reflection, Ganesha invoked the eternal wisdom of the scriptures: 'The mother and father are the primal root of all creation; within their holy presence dwell all pilgrimage shrines, all universes, and the totality of truth.'

Opening his eyes, Ganesha folded his hands with supreme reverence. Kneeling before Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, he touched their feet with his trunk. Then, with deep devotion and steady, rhythmic steps, he circled his divine parents once, twice, and a third time in sacred circumambulation (pradakshina). Completing the circles, he bowed his forehead to their lotus feet and stated serenely: 'O Divine Father! O Universal Mother! My three circumambulations of the cosmos are complete. Bestow upon me the fruit of wisdom.' Feigning wonder, Lord Shiva inquired: 'Beloved son, you have not set foot beyond this mountain terrace; how sayest thou that the cosmos has been traversed?'

With hands clasped in filial adoration, Ganesha spoke words of profound philosophical truth: 'Revered Father! The eternal Vedas declare that the Mother is a hundred times more sacred than the physical earth, and the Father is greater than the highest heavens. When the entire cosmos, all divine realms, and all sacred rivers reside perpetually within your divine being, what else remains in this universe to traverse? He who circumambulates his parents in truth and love has circled the entirety of creation in a single breath.' Hearing this supreme philosophical realization, Parvati’s eyes misted with boundless maternal tenderness, and Shiva’s heart overflowed with pride. Placing the celestial fruit into Ganesha’s hands, Shiva declared him the foremost of the wise. When Kartikeya returned exhausted from orbiting the galaxies and saw his brother holding the prize, the rationale was explained to him. Overwhelmed by the profound truth, Kartikeya embraced his brother, bowing before his unmatched wisdom. The sacred legend remains eternal: physical velocity is nothing before spiritual enlightenment, and honoring parents is the greatest pilgrimage in all existence.
