The Last Warm Meal
A group of relatives was travelling by bus to attend a family celebration. Heavy traffic delayed them, and the roadside stop they expected to use was closed. In their bag, they found only one warm meal box and a few packets of snacks.
At first, everyone said, “I’m fine,” because nobody wanted to seem demanding. Then little Rohan admitted he was hungry and getting a headache. His aunt asked the group to speak honestly rather than guess. They checked who had eaten recently, what food was left, and which items could be shared. The warm meal was divided into portions, while snacks and water were distributed according to need.
Their adult guide called ahead and found a safe, open stop where they could buy more food. No one was expected to pretend they were not hungry, and no one person was made responsible for sacrificing every time.
When they finally ate together, the family discussed how to pack extra food and water for future trips. They learned that compassion is not only giving something away. It also means communicating honestly, noticing others’ needs, and planning so a shortage does not become a crisis.
