घोंसलों वाला आख़िरी पेड़

स्कूल के बगीचे के किनारे एक पुराना नीम का पेड़ था — इतना बड़ा कि उसकी छाँव में दर्जनों बच्चे एक साथ बैठ सकते थे। स्कूल ने तय किया कि पेड़ के पास की सँकरी पगडंडी को चौड़ा किया जाए ताकि ज़्यादा बच्चे आसानी से आ-जा सकें। ठेकेदार बुलाए जाने से एक दिन पहले, तीसरी कक्षा की विद्यार्थी रिया ने पेड़ को ध्यान से देखा। पेड़ की एक ऊँची शाखा पर कुछ हलचल थी। वह दोस्त अनय को बुलाकर लाई।

Along the edge of the school garden stood an old neem tree — so large that dozens of children could sit together in its shade. The school had decided to widen the narrow path beside it so that more students could move through comfortably. The day before the contractor was to be called, third-grade student Riya looked carefully at the tree. There was movement on one of its high branches. She called her friend Anay over to look.

Riya wrote in her small notebook: the bird's colour, the time, and which direction it came from. They did not try to climb the tree, did not go close to any possible nests, and did not try to identify the bird on their own. They just watched and noted — that was their part.

The experts confirmed there was indeed a nest on that branch — with bulbul eggs inside. They made a suggestion: slightly change the route of the path — shifting it away from directly alongside the tree — and avoid digging the soil above its roots. With this change, the path could still be widened, but both the tree and the nest would remain safe. The school accepted the suggestion.

When the path construction began, a team of children was made observers — watching from a distance to see that the work was following the agreed plan. A few weeks later, the chicks in the nest flew away. The children watched and held a small celebration. Riya's notebook was displayed in the school's science room — "Before you change a place, look carefully" — that was written on the cover.

The nature educator replied, "And that is the hardest thing. Most people see a tree but don't see the life inside it. You saw the life." Hearing this, Anay thought — "That means before changing any place, you should first fully understand it."
