The Neighbourhood’s Missing Ramp
On Saturday morning, Anika arrived at the community library for a reading club. She uses a wheelchair, and the ramp is the route she normally takes. That day, a temporary delivery barrier and stacked boxes blocked it. A person nearby pointed towards a narrow side entrance and said someone could help lift her chair if needed.
Anika explained that the side entrance was too narrow and that being lifted was neither safe nor the solution she wanted. She wanted the same clear, independent route that other visitors used. Her friend Kabir asked whether she would like him to help report the blockage, rather than deciding what she needed for her.
They spoke with the library manager, who moved the boxes with staff and arranged for deliveries to use a designated loading spot. A temporary clear route was marked while the area was checked. The manager asked Anika to confirm whether the ramp was usable and logged the obstruction so the procedure could be improved. The neighbours did not try to move heavy equipment or create a makeshift ramp themselves.
The following week, the library added a sign reminding delivery teams to keep the ramp clear. Staff also included the access route in their opening checklist. Anika suggested that the library ask disabled visitors for feedback when planning changes, and the manager welcomed the idea. She later joined the reading club and helped choose books for its next session.
The neighbours realized that inclusion was not a favour offered to one person. It meant noticing barriers, listening to the people affected, and fixing the system so everyone could take part with dignity.
