For the school science fair, Aditi’s team wanted to build a paper bridge that could hold a small stack of metal washers. They folded the paper, placed it between two books, and added washers one at a time while one student recorded the count.

Aditi suggested a pause. They told their teacher what had happened and waited for guidance before changing the setup. The teacher checked that the area was clear, then helped them think through the variables: the paper’s folds, the distance between the books, and the position of the washers. The team recorded the unexpected result instead of leaving it out of the project.

Their bridge performed differently, and their notes helped explain why. The final display included both the successful tests and the failed attempt, with an explanation of what the team had learned.

If we hide it, we cannot learn from it.” The team discovered that responsible curiosity includes pausing when something unexpected happens, keeping honest records, and seeking guidance when needed.
