King Shibi and the Dove: Boundless Compassion

राजा शिवि अपनी न्यायप्रियता और दया के लिए विख्यात थे। उनका प्रण था कि जो भी उनकी शरण में आएगा, वे उसके प्राणों की रक्षा अवश्य करेंगे।

King Shibi was celebrated across the land for his boundless empathy and his sacred vow to protect any being that sought sanctuary in his court.

एक दिन एक भयभीत नन्हा कपोत (कबूतर) आकाश से गिरकर राजा की गोद में छिप गया। उसके पीछे एक भूखा बाज झपट्टा मारता हुआ आ पहुँचा।

One afternoon, a trembling dove sought refuge in King Shibi's lap, closely followed by a hungry hawk demanding its natural prey.

बाज ने कहा, "राजन! यह मेरा स्वाभाविक भोजन है। इसे शरण देकर आप मुझे भूखा मार रहे हैं।" राजा ने कहा, "शरणागत को त्यागना अधर्म है। इसके बदले तुम मेरे राज्य का कोई भी भोजन ले सकते हो।"

The hawk argued that starving a predator is injustice. King Shibi replied that betraying a refuge-seeker is a sin, offering anything else from his kingdom.

बाज ने कबूतर के वजन के बराबर राजा के शरीर का मांस मांगा। राजा ने तुरंत तराजू मंगाया और अपनी जंघा से मांस काटकर तराजू पर रखना शुरू किया।

The hawk demanded flesh from the king's own thigh equal to the dove's weight. Without hesitation, King Shibi ordered a scale and began offering his flesh.

जब कबूतर का पलड़ा भारी ही रहा, तो राजा स्वयं पूरे शरीर सहित तराजू पर बैठ गए। देवता इंद्र और अग्नि अपने असली रूप में प्रकट हुए और राजा की निस्वार्थ करुणा को नमन किया।

As the scale refused to balance, King Shibi climbed entirely onto the pan. The deities revealed themselves, bowing before his supreme selfless compassion.
