The Blue Jackal
In a dense and rugged wilderness roamed a cunning yet cowardly jackal named Chandarava. Ravaged by weeks of famine, hunger gnawed at his vitals until his ribs showed like dry wicker. Desperate for sustenance, he transgressed the ancient boundary of beasts and crept into a nearby city under the veil of midnight. But the town’s guard dogs immediately caught his wild scent. Howling with fury, a pack of mastiffs converged upon him with bared fangs, forcing the terrified scavenger to flee through labyrinthine alleys in blind terror.
Panting for breath, Chandarava darted through the gateway of a dyer’s yard. There stood a colossal clay vat brimming with indigo extract used to tint textiles. In his panic to evade the snapping jaws, the jackal lost his footing and plunged headlong into the pungent blue dye. Baffled by the overpowering odor, the hounds lost his trail and dispersed. When the dawn’s first light pierced the mist, Chandarava dragged himself out. Glancing into a puddle, he gasped in astonishment: from whisker to tail, his mangy fur had turned an electrifying, sapphire blue.
When Chandarava returned to the jungle adorned in this celestial hue, shock rippled through the wilderness. Not only did hares and deer scatter in terror, but even the apex predators—lions, royal tigers, and bull elephants—retreated before this uncanny apparition. Sensing their bewilderment, Chandarava’s native cowardice transformed into brazen opportunism. Ascending a mossy crag, he projected a resonant proclamation: 'Halt, denizens of the woods! Flee not! Witnessing your lawless strife, the Creator Brahma anointed me with heavenly herbs and dispatched me to be your benevolent sovereign. Henceforth, address me as King Kakudruma!'
Awed by the supernatural color, the beasts bowed in fealty. The proud lion yielded his sovereignty to serve as prime minister; the tiger assumed command of the armies; leopards brought choice quarry to his lair, while elephants trumpeted his glory. Kakudruma basked in unearned luxury, receiving the finest tithes without lifting a paw. Yet haunted by the dread of exposure, his first royal decree was ruthless: 'Expel every common jackal beyond our realm, for their species is ignoble and foul!' Humiliated and banished, the rightful scavengers were cast into the wastes.
For seasons the charade prospered, yet truth cannot be suffocated forever. On an autumn night bathed in the crystal luminescence of a full moon, a pack of exiled jackals gathered upon a distant ridge and commenced their ancestral chorus—a melancholic, piercing howl echoing across the valley. As that familiar cadence struck the blue sovereign’s ears, his blood responded like lightning. His royal posture trembled, his hair bristled, and despite pressing his paws against his snout, the irresistible tidal pull of nature overwhelmed his borrowed dignity.
Throwing back his head upon the royal dais, King Kakudruma howled with unrestrained savagery: 'Hoo-aaan! Hoo-aaan!' The assembly froze in petrified silence. In that single instant, the illusion shattered. The lion let out a roar of thundering outrage: 'A fraud! An imposter jackal has made fools of kings!' Before the dyer’s victim could take a single leap, the furious predators descended upon him. This profound fable instructs that borrowed ornaments, artificial masks, and stolen prestige crumble when tested by reality; true honor is rooted not in appearance, but in intrinsic virtue and integrity.
