🌟 Moral of the Story
"Do not judge a situation or punish anyone before checking the facts."

In an ancient and serene pilgrimage village lived Devasharma, a learned and devout Brahmin, who dwelled in a modest thatched cottage with his wife. Though material riches eluded them, their humble life was enriched with profound contentment and mutual devotion. After long years of earnest prayer, their home was blessed with the birth of a beautiful son, filling their hearth with boundless delight. Around that same time, Devasharma discovered an orphaned baby mongoose whimpering in the thorn-bushes, its mother having fallen victim to a hunter's arrow. Stirred by deep pity, he brought the frail creature home, where the couple nurtured it like their own offspring, sharing milk and warmth under the same roof.

As seasons turned, the mongoose grew lively, fiercely loyal, and remarkably intelligent. Whenever the infant slept in his wooden cradle, the mongoose would sit faithfully beside the threshold like a guardian sentinel, purring with joy at the footsteps of the family. Yet a lingering seed of maternal anxiety haunted the Brahmin's wife. She frequently warned her husband, 'My lord, though this animal appears affectionate, it remains a creature of instinct. A wild beast’s innate nature cannot be entirely subdued. I fear constantly for our tender babe.' Devasharma would gently reassure her that selfless love awakens noble loyalty and heartfelt gratitude even in wild creatures.

One sweltering summer afternoon, Devasharma journeyed to a neighbouring hamlet to perform sacred rituals and gather daily alms. The infant lay fast asleep in the sheltered room. Finding the water jars empty, the mother prepared to fetch freshwater from the community well. Before stepping outside, she glanced at the mongoose guarding the cradle. Rationalizing that the well was nearby and she would return shortly, she hurried away with her heavy earthen urn. Moments after her departure, an ominous hiss stirred the silence; from a pile of dry firewood slithered a deadly black cobra. With venomous fangs bared and hooded gaze fixed on the cradle, the serpent advanced toward the sleeping child.

Detecting the scent of the reptile and hearing the faint rasping of scales against the mud floor, the mongoose bristled with protective fury. Driven by intense devotion to the family that had sheltered him and fierce love for his human brother, he sprang between the serpent and the cradle without a heartbeat of hesitation. A savage life-and-death clash erupted in the dim room. The cobra lunged with venomous fury, but the agile mongoose dodged every fatal strike. With supreme courage and surgical precision, he clamped his jaws behind the hooded skull, thrashing the serpent until it lay torn into lifeless fragments. Victorious and drenched in venom-tainted blood, he proudly trotted to the threshold to await the mother's return.

Moments later, the mother balanced the brimful urn on her head and arrived at the entrance. As she crossed the gateway, the mongoose rushed happily toward her, wagging his tail, his muzzle and forepaws stained with glistening blood. At the dreadful sight of crimson gore, panic shattered her composure and a veil of blinding fury descended upon her senses. Suspicion hardened instantaneously into false certainty: 'Merciless beast! You have slaughtered my child!' Without pausing to think, without peering into the room, she raised the massive earthen urn with all her physical strength and hurled it down upon the unsuspecting animal. With a muffled shriek, the spine-crushed creature collapsed lifeless onto the stones.

Screaming in agony, she burst into the inner chamber, only to freeze in utter horror. There in the cradle lay her infant, cooing gently and reaching playfully at the sunbeams, while on the floor beneath lay the severed, mangled remnants of the giant cobra. Truth pierced her soul like a lightning bolt. The heroic creature she had just bludgeoned in blind frenzy was the very savior who had bled to defend her baby's life. Collapsing on the stones, she beat her chest in torrential tears of remorse. When Devasharma returned, he found his weeping wife cradling the lifeless body of their faithful guardian. But tears could not undo the irreversible strike of anger, leaving behind the timeless moral: an impulse unchecked by discernment breeds sorrow that a lifetime of mourning cannot mend.
