The Crosswalk Chalk
Every afternoon, Meera and her classmates crossed the road at the marked crossing outside their school. They noticed that some vehicles stopped too far forward, while others approached quickly and seemed not to notice the faded lines. The children began discussing how to make the crossing easier to see.
“I have chalk in my bag. We could draw brighter lines tonight,” said one student. Their teacher, Mr. Das, stopped the plan. Roads are public spaces, and children must never enter traffic or alter road markings themselves. A well-meant action could create confusion or danger.
Instead, the class kept a safe observation record from the school gate with an adult present. They noted the times when the crossing was hardest to see, counted how often cars stopped beyond it, and asked families what they had noticed. The teacher sent the summary to the school administration and the responsible local road office.
A road-safety worker visited, assessed the crossing, and arranged for approved markings and a warning sign to be refreshed. The school also reminded families to use the crossing and follow the crossing guard’s directions.
The children were proud, not because they had fixed the road with their own hands, but because they used facts, asked for help, and followed a safe process. They learned that responsible citizenship combines initiative with respect for safety and expertise.
