The Monkey and the Crocodile
In ancient times, a colossal and sheltering black-plum tree stood upon the sacred banks of the Narmada River. Its sprawling boughs were laden throughout the seasons with nectar-sweet, purple fruit. High within its canopy dwelt a thoughtful monkey named Raktamukha. In the placid waters below lived a seasoned crocodile named Karalamukha. One sweltering afternoon, observing the reptile resting upon the sandy shore, Raktamukha graciously plucked the ripest berries and tossed them down. Touched by this unexpected generosity, Karalamukha savored the feast, and an enduring bond of mutual trust blossomed between them.
Every twilight, the two companions conversed for hours beneath the amber sky. Raktamukha spoke of celestial constellations and ethical wisdom, while Karalamukha narrated legends from the submerged canyons of the deep. Before parting, the monkey invariably gathered a bountiful parcel of fruits for the crocodile's spouse. Yet when the crocodile's wife tasted the divine berries, gratitude did not awaken within her heart; instead, cold malice and greed took root. Coveting an unnatural feast, she hissed, 'If this creature consumes such ambrosial fruit daily, imagine how sweet his heart must be! Bring me his heart, or I shall starve myself to death.'
Karalamukha recoiled in horror at her abhorrent demand. Pleading with anguish, he cried, 'Beloved, Raktamukha is my sworn brother in friendship. He has sustained us with unblemished benevolence. Betrayal is a stain no river can wash clean.' Yet his wife remained obstinate, commencing a fatal fast. Blinded by infatuation and familial pressure, Karalamukha surrendered his moral compass. Arriving at the shore with downcast eyes, he offered a deceitful invitation: 'Dear friend, my wife is overwhelmed with remorse for not honoring you sooner. She has prepared a splendid banquet in your honor. Ride upon my back, and let our household welcome you.'
Trusting his companion completely, Raktamukha leapt onto the reptile's armored back. As they reached the turbulent heart of the river where currents ran deep and merciless, guilt weighed heavily upon Karalamukha's conscience. Unable to bear the burden of duplicity, he confessed with a trembling voice, 'Forgive me, brother! There is no banquet awaiting you. My wife demands your living heart, and I am delivering you to her.' Stranded in the abyss where he could neither swim nor flee, terror seized the monkey's spirit. Yet displaying extraordinary self-mastery, he did not panic; instead, he marshaled his razor-sharp wit.
Raktamukha chuckled with disarming ease: 'O simplehearted friend! Why carry such torment over so trifling a request? Had you informed me on land, I would have gladly brought it! We forest dwellers keep our precious hearts enshrined within the hollows of our trees, free from the hazards of travel. Take me back swiftly, so I may fetch my heart and present it with honor to your lady.' Dupe to the monkey's composed facade, Karalamukha turned around and swam vigorously toward the bank. The instant shallow ground appeared, Raktamukha surged upward in an electric leap, vanishing into the sanctuary of the high boughs.
Looking down from the fortress of green leaves, Raktamukha proclaimed with righteous dignity: 'O treacherous Karalamukha! What living being survives detached from his own heart? You possess the brawn of a leviathan, yet the moral discernment of a speck of dust. A companionship that barters loyalty for selfish comfort is like milk poisoned with cobra venom—to be renounced forever. Return to your swamp; our bond is severed.' Shamed and broken, the crocodile sank into the murk. The ancient parable reminds us: no matter how helpless one feels in the grip of crisis, serene intellect and unyielding presence of mind triumph over deceit.
