🌟 Moral of the Story
"Good thinking means checking the information given, noticing missing details, and explaining why an answer follows from the evidence."

During mathematics club, Ms. Rao gave the class a challenge: “A rectangle has a perimeter of 20 centimetres. Find its area.” Arjun looked at the number 20 and divided it in half. “Each side must be five centimetres, so the area is 25 square centimetres,” he announced. He felt pleased that he had answered first.

Leela raised her hand. “That would make a square. Did the question say every rectangle must be a square?”

The class was quiet. Ms. Rao asked them to test their ideas with rulers. One group drew a rectangle 4 centimetres long and 6 centimetres wide. Its perimeter was 4 + 6 + 4 + 6 = 20 centimetres, and its area was 24 square centimetres. Another group drew one measuring 3 by 7 centimetres. Its perimeter was also 20 centimetres, but its area was 21 square centimetres.

Arjun checked his calculation again. His answer would work only if the shape were a square, which the question had not said. The class discussed what extra information—such as one side’s length—would be needed to find a single area.

Ms. Rao praised the students for testing the clue instead of arguing over who was quickest. They wrote a new habit on the board: “Before solving, ask what is known, what is missing, and what am I assuming?”
