The Real Mother
In the sacred capital of Ujjain ruled Emperor Vikramaditya, a sovereign celebrated across the ancient world for his peerless justice, piercing psychological insight, and unswerving righteousness. In his hall of audience, innocence was an impregnable shield, and falsehood withered under his gaze. One morning, the court was stirred by the entry of two distraught women. Between them, cradled in the arms of a court attendant, lay a beautiful six-month-old infant, cooing innocently. Both women were weeping profusely, filling the chamber with passionate laments.
The first woman, Leela, cast herself before the throne: 'O Emperor of Justice! This child was born of my womb, the light of my life! Last night, while I lay in deep exhaustion, this neighbor, Champa, lost her own newborn to a sudden infant fever. Maddened by envy and grief, she crept into my cottage, snatched my living babe from his cradle, and laid her deceased child upon my mattress! When I awoke and demanded my son, she brazenly claimed him as her own!' Champa beat her breast in fury, countering: 'Lies, my Lord! Monorous falsehoods! This boy is flesh of my flesh. It was Leela's infant who perished in the night, and she seeks to steal my living joy to soothe her bereavement!'
King Vikramaditya summoned village elders, midwives, and neighbors to testify. But the infants had been born within days of each other, and the alleged substitution had occurred in the pitch darkness of midnight without witnesses. The testimonies contradicted each other; physical resemblances were inconclusive. The chief minister and the grand jurists threw up their hands in despair. Awarding the child to the wrong claimant would be a catastrophic miscarriage of divine justice. The entire assembly held its breath, awaiting the monarch's discernment.
Vikramaditya closed his eyes in brief contemplation. He pondered the irreducible, cosmic difference between selfish possession and authentic maternal love. Opening his eyes, his countenance assumed a chilling, ruthless severity. Summoning the royal executioner, the King ordered him to draw his heavy steel scimitar. The naked blade glinted under the chandeliers, sending shivers through the courtiers. In a booming voice, Vikramaditya pronounced his verdict: 'Since both women claim this child with equal conviction and the truth remains hidden, the crown cannot favor one over the other. Perfect mathematical justice decrees that the executioner cleave this child into two equal halves! One half shall be awarded to Leela, and the other half to Champa!'
A horrified gasp rippled through the spectators; had the legendary monarch lost his moral compass? At that moment, Champa bowed stiffly and spoke with cold approval: 'The Emperor’s judgment is absolute and fair! Let the boy be divided; let neither of us triumph over the other, so that discord may be settled forever!' But before the executioner could take a step, Leela let out a bloodcurdling scream of maternal agony. Hurling herself across the child, she shielded the tiny frame with her own body. Collapsing at Vikramaditya’s feet, she wept uncontrollably: 'Mercy, O King! In the name of God, do not bring down that blade upon this tender flesh! I confess, I renounce all claim! The child is not mine! Give him whole and alive to Champa! Let him dwell in her house, let him call her mother; only spare his breath! I will be content merely to watch him run from afar!'
A radiant smile dissolved the King’s stern mask. Waving the executioner away, Vikramaditya pointed an accusing finger at Champa: 'Guards! Seize this deceitful, cold-blooded imposter and cast her into the deepest dungeon! No true mother on earth could ever consent to the butchering of her child; only a hollow, envious parasite would accept the slaughter of an innocent to preserve her pride!' Turning to Leela, the King lifted her from the floor with paternal reverence and placed the baby into her trembling arms: 'Take thy son, noble mother! Press him to thy heart. She who was willing to surrender her maternal rights and endure a lifetime of estrangement solely to preserve her child's precious breath is the true mother consecrated by heaven.' The court erupted in thunderous acclamations for the King's wisdom. The ancient legend remains an eternal truth: genuine love is measured not by possessive grasping, but by the willingness to sacrifice everything for the life and well-being of the beloved.
