Young Vivekananda and the Monkeys
In the late nineteenth century, the ancient city of Kashi (Varanasi) stood as the vibrant spiritual capital of scholarship, asceticism, and divine contemplation. Residing in its labyrinthine alleys was young Narendranath Datta—the future Swami Vivekananda, whose philosophical genius would soon awaken the world at the Parliament of Religions. Possessing a formidable physique, brilliant intellect, and a heart aflame with spiritual yearning, young Narendra wandered along the stone ghats and monastic cloisters, relentlessly questioning the core nature of truth, reality, and fear.
One bright morning, Narendra visited the historic Durga Temple to offer reverent salutations. Emerging from the sanctum with a packet of sweets, he took a rear exit leading through a narrow, ancient stone corridor. The lane was walled on one side by towering masonry and bordered on the other by a deep, algae-covered reservoir. The passage was entirely deserted. Inhabiting this sector was a large, notorious troop of red-faced macaque monkeys that were accustomed to snatching fruit and grain aggressively from passing pilgrims.
As Narendra reached the middle of the narrow lane, dozens of large, battle-scarred monkeys dropped down from the parapets. Catching scent of the sweets in his hand, the pack blocked his advance and rear. The alpha male bared its lethal canines, hissing with territorial rage. Younger primates snapped at Narendra's heels and tugged at the folds of his dhoti. Overwhelmed by the sudden ambush in the claustrophobic space, a cold wave of panic gripped Narendra’s chest. Abandoning composure, he pivoted and sprinted back the way he had come with desperate speed.
It is an unbending psychological law of nature: when one turns and flees from peril, the terror of the pursuer multiplies tenfold. Seeing the tall youth sprint in retreat, the monkeys grew exceedingly bold. Interpreting his flight as absolute vulnerability, the entire troop gave chase with screeching fury. Several sprang over his head, others clawed at his shoulders, and snapping jaws tore at his clothes. His heart pounded violently; he felt certain he would be dragged to the flagstones and mauled.
(Face the brutes!)'
At that precarious threshold stood an elderly, austere ascetic leaning against a wooden gateway. Observing the chaotic chase with immovable composure, the sage drew in a deep breath and projected a commanding, thunderous roar that echoed off the stone walls: 'Do not run! Turn around! Face the brutes!' The words were no ordinary admonition; they sounded like a divine clarion call piercing straight through the fog of animal panic, awakening the dormant lion within Narendra’s soul.
Narendra’s boots ground into the flagstones like iron anchors. Halting instantly, he whirled around to face his pursuers. Squaring his broad shoulders and clenching his fists, he fixed his blazing, hypnotic eyes directly upon the snarling alpha male. His entire posture transformed into an immovable statue of sovereign defiance. Stunned by this sudden metamorphosis from a fleeing quarry into an invincible force, the screeching horde screeched to a halt. The alpha blinked, hesitated, and broke eye contact. Within seconds, the predatory aggression dissolved into animal confusion; the troop retreated step by step, turned tail, and scrambled frantically up the brick walls into the canopy. The path was entirely clear. Walking to the ascetic, Narendra bowed in deep reverence. The sage placed a hand on his shoulder: 'Remember this day, my son. Life’s terrors and temptations pursue only those who turn their backs. The moment you plant your feet and confront the storm with an unyielding soul, illusion retreats into the shadows.' Narendra carried this revelation through life, transforming it into the clarion roar that electrified nations across the globe: 'Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached! Face the brutes of life with courage!'
