🌟 Moral of the Story
"Choose the right time and place for every action; listen to sensible advice."

On the outskirts of a bustling trade town lived Uddhata, an exhausted donkey bound in servitude to a relentless washerman. From dawn to dusk, he hauled crushing bundles of soaked laundry to the riverbanks, his back aching under cruel burdens. The washerman was notoriously stingy, offering meager handfuls of dry chaff that scarcely appeased the beast’s gnawing hunger. Driven by necessity, Uddhata roamed the peri-urban groves each midnight in search of nourishment. During these solitary nocturnal wanderings, he met a crafty yet pragmatic jackal who scavenged along the peripheries of the town.

Shared necessity soon forged a partnership between the two foragers. The jackal guided Uddhata to a sprawling, well-irrigated plantation belonging to a prosperous farmer, abundant with crisp cucumbers and sweet melons. Slipping beneath a breached hedge, they feasted to their hearts' content night after night. Within weeks of enjoying this luscious diet, Uddhata’s hollow ribs filled out and his coat grew glossy. Flushed with renewed vigor and well-fed leisure, an absurd vanity began to inflate the simple creature's mind.

One autumn night, the full moon bathed the silent countryside in ethereal, silver luminescence. A crisp breeze rustled the melon leaves, and silence settled over the sleeping valley. Having eaten their fill of prime gourds, Uddhata gazed up at the luminous sky, sighed with theatrical delight, and announced, 'Look, my dear companion! How heavenly the silver moonlight is! Such breathtaking ambience, sweet breezes, and a satisfied belly inspire the muse within me. I am compelled to unleash my sublime voice and sing a classical raga!' The jackal froze, staring at his friend in utter disbelief.

The jackal pleaded in hushed, earnest urgency: 'Brother, curb this fatal whim! We are trespassers raiding forbidden crops, not distinguished performers in a royal court. Your voice is not the melody of a celestial minstrel; it is a piercing, grating bray that echoes for miles through the midnight stillness. The watchman sleeps on his wooden loft with a knotty club by his side. The instant your lungs vibrate, he will summon his hounds, and we shall be beaten black and blue. Wisdom dictates that one must harmonize actions with the right time, place, and circumstance.'

Infuriated by the critique, Uddhata sneered, 'You uncouth jungle scavenger! What can a coarse animal like you fathom about classical cadences and celestial scales? You envy my artistic gift because you can only howl at the moon. I refuse to stifle my divine inspiration!' Realizing that pride had entirely blinded the donkey to reality, the jackal bowed mockingly: 'O virtuoso of the night! If your performance cannot be delayed, allow me first to slip through the fence so I may applaud your masterpiece from a respectful distance.' With agile stealth, the jackal leapt through the hedge and vanished into the safety of the brush.

Left alone in the moonlit field, Uddhata threw back his neck, shut his eyes in rapturous ecstasy, and unleashed a thunderous, ear-splitting bray that shattered the nocturnal stillness. On the raised platform, the slumbering farmer jolted awake, clutching his heavy oak lathi. Enraged to see a brazen intruder braying triumphantly amid his ruined crops, the farmer and his kin descended upon the donkey. Blows rained relentlessly upon Uddhata’s flanks and ribs until he could barely stand. They tied a heavy grinding stone around his bruised neck and kicked him through the boundary ditch. Collapsing in the dust, battered and bleeding, Uddhata heard the jackal whisper from the shadows: 'Alas, my musical friend! When vanity scorns wise counsel, applause arrives not in flowers, but in cudgels.'
