🌟 Moral of the Story
"True compassion is not demonstrated through mere words, but through personal sacrifice to shield the vulnerable and defenseless."

In ancient times, King Shibi ruled the blessed realm of Ushinara with profound justice and virtue. Renowned across heaven and earth for his boundless compassion and honor, under his reign no hungry soul was turned away and no helpless creature suffered oppression. The king had sworn a sacred vow: any living being—human, beast, or bird—that sought sanctuary under his protection would be shielded, even at the cost of his own life. One radiant morning, while the king was conferring with his ministers on the welfare of his subjects, a sudden commotion arose in the royal courtyard.

Suddenly, a tiny, snow-white dove fluttered into the palace hall, gasping with terror, and plummeted straight into King Shibi's open lap. Its wings trembled uncontrollably and it buried its soft beak into the folds of the king's silk robe, wordlessly pleading for its life. Before anyone could react, a massive, golden-eyed hawk with razor-sharp talons swooped into the chamber and perched sharply upon the throne's armrest. With eyes gleaming like burning embers, the predator stared intently at the hidden dove, its piercing screech echoing through the hushed hall.

The hawk addressed the king in articulate human speech: 'O King! You are celebrated as a pillar of righteousness, yet today you commit a grave injustice against me! By the laws of nature, this dove is my natural prey. I have flown for days starving under the scorching sun. By shielding this bird, you condemn me to starvation and leave my hungry fledglings in the nest to perish. Is your compassion reserved only for the gentle, while you pass a death sentence upon a hungry predator?' Hearing these piercing philosophical arguments, the ministers and scholars sat in stunned silence.

King Shibi replied with serene grace: 'O noble hawk, your hunger is real, but this terrified dove sought sanctuary in my lap. To betray a soul that surrenders to you is the darkest of sins. I shall not let you starve. Demand whatever feast you wish from my royal treasuries—luscious fruits, roasted delicacies, or anything the realm possesses, and it shall be yours.' The hawk scoffed: 'O King, I am a creature of prey; sweet fruits cannot preserve my life. If you truly wish to redeem this dove, slice an exact measure of flesh equal to this dove’s weight from your own right thigh and place it upon the scales!'

Cries of horror erupted across the assembly. Ministers wept and begged the king to refuse such a gruesome ordeal. Yet King Shibi, without an instant's hesitation, ordered a great golden scale to be placed before the throne. The tiny dove was nestled upon one pan. Drawing a ceremonial blade with a tranquil smile, the king sliced a portion of flesh from his own right thigh and placed it upon the other pan. To everyone's astonishment, the dove's pan did not budge an inch! Shibi severed another piece, and yet another, piling his own flesh onto the balance, but the featherlight dove remained heavier than a mountain. Blood stained the royal carpet, yet not a single flinch of agony crossed the king’s serene face—only the radiant glow of selflessness.

Seeing the balance remain tipped, King Shibi rose with majestic composure and climbed bodily onto the scale: 'O hawk! My entire being is now yours. Feast upon me and spare this innocent refuge!' The moment the king stepped onto the pan, celestial music echoed from the heavens and fragrant blossoms rained down upon the court. The hawk and the dove vanished, revealing the radiant forms of Indra, King of Devas, and Agni, Lord of Fire, who had descended to test the king’s virtue. Bowing in reverence, the deities instantly restored Shibi's body to radiant perfection: 'O King! So long as the sun and stars endure, your selfless compassion shall inspire all humanity.' This timeless tale teaches every child that true nobility lies not in commanding power, but in possessing the courage to sacrifice oneself to protect the helpless.
