🌟 Moral of the Story
"A companion who offers grand promises in comfort but abandons you in peril was never a true friend. Adversity is the only true test of loyalty."

In the idyllic valley village of Chandanpur lived two young companions named Rohan and Sohan. Growing up side by side since toddlerhood, they attended the same village school and spent golden afternoons playing beneath the ancient banyan tree. Sohan was quick-tongued and fond of grandiose promises, while Rohan was observant, quiet, and deeply sincere. Villagers admired their constant companionship, believing their bond to be unbreakable. Yet Rohan's wise grandmother often reminded him: 'Sweet words are easy to scatter in sunshine, Rohan; the true metal of friendship is tested only when thunder strikes.' Rohan would smile affectionately, harboring complete faith in his companion.

One morning, the boys had to carry handcrafted goods to a bustling trade town on the other side of the mountain ridge. The swiftest trail ran straight through a dense, ancient wilderness flanked by towering teak and sal trees, known to harbor wolves, wild boars, and massive Himalayan black bears. As they stood at the shadowy threshold of the woods, Rohan felt a fleeting hesitation. Noticing this, Sohan clapped him on the shoulder grandly: 'Have no fear, brother Rohan! We are one in spirit! Come tigers or monsters, I swear I shall stand beside you until my last breath. We shall conquer every danger together!' Reassured by these brave vows, Rohan stepped trustingly beside his friend into the deep canopy.

At midday, as they traversed the most isolated ravine where thick overhanging foliage cast an eerie twilight, the sharp snap of dry branches shattered the silence. Before they could react, a colossal, shaggy black bear burst through the bamboo thicket, planting its massive paws right in the middle of their trail! Snorting heavily with glowing yellow eyes, the beast stood barely twenty paces away. At this terrifying sight, every ounce of Sohan’s boasted courage evaporated like mist. Forgetting his sacred oaths, his brotherly pledges, and his defenseless companion, Sohan sprinted in terror, scrambled up the trunk of a tall banyan tree like a monkey, and hid within the dense foliage without offering a single word or hand to Rohan.

Rohan was left standing alone in the clearing. He had never learned to climb trees, and attempting to outrun a bear was certain death, as predators instantly pursue fleeing prey. Heartbroken by Sohan’s instant betrayal, Rohan refused to succumb to blind panic. His presence of mind kicked in, recalling a valuable bushcraft lesson taught by his father: 'A wild bear rarely harms a lifeless body; it instinctively avoids already motionless prey.' With no seconds to spare, Rohan dropped flat onto the forest floor, pressed his face against the damp soil, closed his eyes, held his breath completely, and relaxed every sinew until he lay as rigid and still as a fallen log.

With heavy, thudding steps, the enormous beast lumbered over to Rohan. It circled his still form twice, sniffing intently. The creature’s coarse snout brushed against Rohan’s neck, ears, and temples, its hot, rank breath washing across his cheeks. Rohan’s pulse raced, yet by sheer force of willpower, he suppressed even the faintest twitch or breath, holding himself in absolute stillness. Convinced by the absence of breath and movement that this was merely a lifeless trunk, the bear grunted softly, lost interest, and shuffled away into the deep jungle. Rohan remained motionless for several minutes until the heavy rustling faded into silence.

Once the danger had completely passed, Sohan slid down from the banyan tree with brazen ease. Brushing twigs from his clothes and laughing nervously, he walked up to Rohan: 'Whew, what an adventure! You certainly are blessed with fortune, brother! But tell me, the bear hovered over your ear for so long... it looked as though he was whispering some ancient secret! What did the beast say to you?' Rohan stood up, brushed the forest dust from his clothes, and looked directly into Sohan’s eyes with quiet, dignified resolve: 'Yes Sohan, the bear whispered the most valuable truth of my life. He said: Never walk life’s path with someone who pledges loyalty in the sunshine, but scrambles up a tree to save his own skin the moment peril strikes.' Picking up his satchel, Rohan turned and walked toward the town alone, having gained the priceless wisdom of discernment. This eternal fable reminds us that true friendship is never measured by hollow promises, but by steadfast loyalty in the hour of trial.
