The Crows and the Black Snake
Upon the serene banks of the sacred Ganges towered a centuries-old banyan tree, its sprawling canopy sheltering a bustling realm of diverse winged creatures. High amidst its interwoven boughs nested Laghupatanaka, an alert crow, and his devoted mate. Together they had painstakingly woven a sturdy sanctuary from twigs and moss, living in idyllic harmony. However, tragedy cast its dark shadow when an enormous, venomous black cobra slithered into a deep subterranean cavity at the base of the massive trunk, claiming it as its lair.
When spring arrived, the female crow laid four spotted eggs, and the pair looked forward with joyful anticipation to hearing the hungry chirps of new life. But no sooner had the frail fledglings hatched and their parents flown into the meadows for grubs, than the vicious serpent glided up the bark. Slipping into the cradle of leaves, it devoured the defenseless brood whole. When the parents returned bearing worms, they were greeted by cold silence and telltale smears of blood. The mother wailed in inconsolable anguish. When this merciless massacre repeated the following season, their grief turned into burning desolation.
Weeping bitterly, the mother pleaded, 'My beloved, we can never raise children under this curse. Let us abandon this ancient tree and seek a distant sanctuary where our tears may finally dry.' But Laghupatanaka shook his dark head with resolute dignity: 'Beloved, abandoning ancestral heritage out of fear is the mark of cowardice. While our talons are powerless against venomous fangs, intellectual strategy possesses power far greater than sheer muscle. I shall seek counsel from our old friend, the jackal, whose insight in the art of political stratagem is peerless.' Spreading his wings, he flew swiftly to the jackal’s forest den.
Listening attentively to the tale of torment, the jackal smiled with quiet assurance: 'Grieve no more, noble friend. To destroy an overwhelming foe, one need not wield the weapon oneself; supreme tact lies in deploying an invincible third party against the oppressor. Daily, the kingdom's sovereign and his retinue escort the queen to the secluded royal lake for bathing. When the queen deposits her diamond-studded pearl necklace upon the marble pavilion before entering the waters, seize the jewel in your beak. Fly low and deliberate, ensuring the armed royal guards witness the theft and give pursuit.'
The very next afternoon, Laghupatanaka perched upon a pipal branch overlooking the royal lake. The royal procession arrived, and the queen gracefully removed her shimmering necklace of radiant pearls, laying it upon a velvet cushion before stepping into the crystalline pool. Seizing the exact split second, the crow plummeted like an arrow, snatched the precious necklace in his beak, and ascended into the azure sky. Hearing the maidservants’ shrieks, the royal guards drew their scimitars and spears, giving frantic chase. Laghupatanaka flew at a teasingly low altitude, keeping just out of bowshot to lead the company straight toward the ancient banyan.
Panting beneath the sprawling banyan, the soldiers observed the pearls gleaming within the shadowy crevice of the trunk. As an officer extended his long pike to retrieve the ornament, the disturbed serpent surged forward, flaring its hood and hissing deadly venom. Seeing the lethal beast threatening their lives, the royal guards struck without hesitation; iron spears and maces smashed the serpent's skull, terminating the menace instantly. Retrieving the untarnished necklace, the guards marched back to the citadel. High above in the foliage, the crow and his mate embraced with tears of profound relief, forever indebted to the jackal’s tactical genius. They lived in peace, proving that where physical might meets an impasse, strategic intellect crafts an infallible triumph.
