The Kite and the Power Lines

मकर संक्रांति के बाद का रविवार था और हल्के नीले आकाश में धूप खिली हुई थी। मोहल्ले के खुले मैदान में आरव, मेहुल और उनके दोस्त रंग-बिरंगी पतंगें उड़ा रहे थे। हवा बहुत सुहानी थी और आरव की लाल पतंग सबसे ऊँची उड़ान भर रही थी। तभी अचानक हवा का एक तेज़ झोंका आया और पतंग डगमगा गई। डोर आरव के हाथ से छूट गई और पतंग लहराती हुई मैदान के किनारे से गुज़रने वाली 11,000 वोल्ट की बिजली की तारों के बीच जाकर उलझ गई।

It was the crisp Sunday following the kite festival, and the sky was bathed in radiant sunshine. In the neighbourhood open grounds, Aarav, Mehul, and their school friends were flying colourful paper kites. The breeze was lively, and Aarav's scarlet kite soared highest of all. Suddenly, a violent gust caught the kite's sail, snapping the thread from his fingers. Drifting wildly, the kite became tightly tangled within high-voltage overhead power cables bordering the field.

आरव की वह पतंग उसके बड़े भाई ने उपहार में दी थी और उसे बेहद प्यारी थी। पतंग को तारों में फँसा देखकर आरव व्याकुल हो उठा। उसने ज़मीन से एक गीला बाँस का डंडा उठाया और मैदान की ऊँची चारदीवारी पर चढ़ने लगा। उसने कहा, "मैं अभी दीवार पर चढ़कर इस डंडे से डोर खींच लेता हूँ। बस एक मिनट का काम है!" उसके दो साथी ताली बजाकर कहने लगे, "शाबाश आरव! दिखा अपनी बहादुरी!"

That kite had been a cherished birthday gift from Aarav's elder brother, and he was devastated to see it trapped. Overwhelmed by impulse, Aarav grabbed a damp bamboo pole lying in the muddy grass and began scrambling up the boundary wall. He declared boldly: "I can reach the snagged line from the top of this wall! It will take just one second to hook it free." Two peers clapped and cheered: "Go for it, Aarav! Show us how brave you are!"

मेहुल ने जब आरव को दीवार पर चढ़ते देखा, तो उसके रोंगटे खड़े हो गए। उसने बिना एक पल गँवाए दौड़कर आरव की टी-शर्ट का कोना पकड़ा और ज़ोर से आवाज़ दी, "आरव, रुक जाओ! नीचे उतरो!" आरव झिड़कते हुए बोला, "छोड़ मुझे! तू डरपोक है क्या? मैं पतंग निकाल कर ही मानूँगा।" लेकिन मेहुल टस से मस नहीं हुआ। उसने आरव के हाथ से गीला बाँस खींच लिया और उसे ज़बरदस्ती दीवार से नीचे उतारा।

Seeing Aarav scale the boundary wall, Mehul's heart skipped a beat. Without losing a second, he dashed across the grass, caught Aarav by the hem of his shirt, and shouted firmly: "Aarav, stop! Get down right now!" Aarav retorted impatiently: "Let go of me! Are you a coward? I'm getting my kite back!" But Mehul stood his ground. He grabbed the wet bamboo pole away and firmly pulled Aarav down to safe footing.

मेहुल ने हाँफते हुए सब दोस्तों को समझाया, "बिजली की हाई-टेंशन तारों में अदृश्य करंट दौड़ता है। गीला बाँस या धातु-मिश्रित माँझा बिजली का सुचालक होता है। ज़रा सा छूने या पास जाने पर भी बिजली का जानलेवा झटका खींच सकता है। पतंग बीस रुपये की है, लेकिन तुम्हारी जान अनमोल है!" मेहुल की गंभीर और तार्किक बात सुनकर बाकी बच्चों के चेहरे की हँसी गायब हो गई और आरव का गुस्सा भी शांत हो गया।

Panting, Mehul explained to the startled circle: "High-voltage wires carry lethal electricity that can arc through the air. A damp bamboo pole or coated kite-string conducts electrical current instantly. Touching or even reaching near those lines can cause fatal electrocution in a microsecond! A kite costs twenty rupees, but your life is irreplaceable!" Hearing Mehul's rational warning, the cheering stopped abruptly, and Aarav's stubbornness turned into sober realization.

मेहुल तुरंत दौड़कर अपनी माँ और मोहल्ले के चौकीदार चाचा को बुला लाया। माँ ने बच्चों की सजगता की प्रशंसा की और तुरंत बिजली वितरण कंपनी के 24-घंटे वाले टोल-फ़्री आपातकालीन नंबर पर कॉल किया। बीस मिनट के भीतर बिजली विभाग की पीली जीप पहुँची। रबर के सुरक्षात्मक दस्ताने और विशेष उपकरणों से लैस तकनीशियन ने सुरक्षा प्रोटोकॉल का पालन करते हुए मेन लाइन बंद करवाई और सावधानी से तारों में फँसी पतंग और माँझा हटाया ताकि कोई चिंगारी न भड़के।

Mehul immediately ran to summon his mother and the locality watchman. His mother praised the boys' quick-thinking restraint and phoned the municipal electricity emergency helpline. Within twenty minutes, a utility utility van arrived. Equipped with insulated rubber gloves and specialized fiberglass reach poles, certified technicians temporarily isolated the circuit and safely cleared the tangled twine, preventing electrical shorts and brush fires.

तकनीशियन अंकल ने बच्चों के सिर पर हाथ फेरते हुए कहा, "अगर इस बच्चे ने आज तुम्हें न रोका होता, तो बड़ा हादसा हो सकता था। सच्चा साहस ख़तरा मोल लेने में नहीं, बल्कि सही समय पर सही फ़ैसला लेने में है।" आरव ने नम आँखों से मेहुल को गले लगा लिया और कहा, "दोस्त, आज तुमने मुझे एक झूठी बहादुरी के जाल से बचाकर असली बहादुरी सिखाई है।" उस दिन के बाद से सभी बच्चों ने बिजली के खंभों से दूर मैदान के खुले हिस्से में ही खेलना तय किया।

The technician placed a reassuring hand on Mehul's shoulder: "Had this young man not intervened, a terrible tragedy could have occurred. True courage is not courting needless danger; it is having the strength to choose safety when peers push you toward foolishness." With misty eyes, Aarav embraced Mehul: "Thank you, friend. Today you saved me from reckless bravado and taught me genuine courage." From that afternoon on, the children flew kites only in open clearings far from power lines.
