🌟 Moral of the Story
"Return found devices through a trusted process and respect the privacy of the person who owns them."

Farhan was helping his aunt at her handicrafts stall at the neighbourhood's annual fair. In the afternoon, he noticed a phone lying under a bench near the stall. It was a smartphone with a flickering screen, with several notifications coming in. Farhan looked around — no one was there. His first thought was: Can I check whose this is? But immediately a second thought came: but this is someone's private property.

Farhan picked up the phone and walked directly to the fair's official lost-and-found desk. Two volunteers were sitting there. Farhan gave them the phone and explained exactly where he had found it and at what time. A volunteer noted it in a register and gave Farhan a slip confirming that the phone had been handed in and that the owner would be asked to identify it. Farhan asked, "Will my name be written too?" The volunteer said, "Yes, so that the owner can thank you if they wish."

A little later, a worried visitor came to the lost-and-found desk — a woman named Rekha. She explained that she had placed her phone on a bench while watching children and it had disappeared. The volunteer asked her the phone's colour, model, and screen lock pattern — Rekha answered everything correctly. The phone was then returned to her. There was relief in Rekha's eyes. She said, "My child's photos are in it — if it hadn't been found, I would have been heartbroken."

Rekha found Farhan and thanked him. He said, "Anyone would do the same." Rekha replied, "I wish everyone would." Then she added, "You didn't open my phone — that matters most." Farhan had considered looking through the phone to find a contact number, but he remembered what his aunt had once said: "Someone's phone is like their diary — reading it without permission is not right."

At the end of the fair, the organisers announced a new arrangement for the following year: a large signboard near the entrance would be put up about the lost-and-found desk. A new rule was added: found electronic devices were to be handed only to the desk, not kept personally or opened. Hearing this, Farhan quietly thought, "I'm glad I did the right thing — this will help someone else in the future too."

On the way home, Farhan asked his aunt, "Aunty, if I had opened the phone to find the owner, would that also have been right?" His aunt thought for a moment and said, "The intention would have been good, but the method wrong. Respecting someone's privacy means — even if you want to help them, you still honour their boundaries." Farhan kept those words with him. This lesson wasn't in any textbook — life had taught it.
