🌟 Moral of the Story
"Preventing waste starts before an event through thoughtful choices and shared responsibility."

When Ms. D'Souza announced the class picnic, everyone cheered. But when she added that this year's picnic would be "zero-waste" — meaning no rubbish would be left behind — a thoughtful silence fell over the classroom. Arnav raised his hand: "Ma'am, how is that even possible?" Ms. D'Souza smiled. "Good question. We'll figure it out together."

The next day the class made a simple checklist together. It said: bring only food you will actually eat — no excess; pack everything in reusable containers, not plastic bags or wrappers; bring water from home in a bottle, and a refill point would be set up at the park; and take all your rubbish back with you. At first the list seemed difficult, but when children told their parents at home, most families happily cooperated.

In preparing for the picnic, a small team was formed whose job was to remind everyone — after eating, to collect their wrappers, fruit peels, and leftover packaging. Another team put up a cloth banner near the park's water tap: "Refill your bottle here." A third team made a "brought it, take it back" basket where anyone could place any extra waste and bring it back on the bus. None of this was done by one person — everyone did it together.

On the day of the picnic, the plan worked. Children shared game ideas, refilled their bottles, and after eating, stood up and cleaned their own spots. One child had lost the lid to his container — he covered it with his cap and carried it safely to the bus. Another girl had some extra food she couldn't finish — she placed it in the "brought it, take it back" basket and brought it home. The park was as clean when they left as when they had arrived.

On the bus home, the children talked among themselves. Arnav said, "I thought having a checklist would ruin the fun. But the opposite happened — because of the plan, there was no confusion at all." Sia added, "And the park caretaker wasn't annoyed with us either." Ms. D'Souza asked, "What will you do next time?" Everyone said together, "The same thing!"

The following week, Ms. D'Souza asked the class a question: "What did you learn from the picnic?" The answers came: "Reducing waste starts before the event, not during it." "Working together makes every task feel easier." "When everyone takes a small responsibility, no one carries a heavy burden alone." Ms. D'Souza wrote all the answers on the blackboard and said, "That is the real lesson."
