🌟 Moral of the Story
"The cheapest upfront choice is not always the best value; compare total cost and actual needs."

Nisha's school bag strap had snapped. Her mother said, "Let's get a new bag." At the market shop, three bags were displayed. The one at the front was bright and eye-catching — green, with large zips — priced at ₹600. The middle one was plain, at ₹1,100. The third was a slightly old design, at ₹900. Nisha's eyes went straight to the green bag. "Let's take this one — it's the cheapest too!" she said. Her mother smiled, "Wait — let's look at all three properly first."

Mother took out a piece of paper and made a small table. Three columns: price, how long it might last (estimated), and repair cost if something broke. Looking at the green bag's stitching, even the shopkeeper honestly said it was for light use — possibly less than a year. The ₹1,100 bag was made from heavy-duty material with a three-year assurance. The ₹900 bag had a brand service centre where broken zips could be replaced. Mother said, "Now let's do the real calculation — what will the total cost over three years be?"

Nisha worked out the numbers herself. Green bag: if it breaks every year, three years would cost ₹600 × 3 = ₹1,800. Middle bag: one purchase of ₹1,100, for three years. The ₹900 bag: one purchase, perhaps one zip replacement — around ₹1,050 over three years. On the paper in Nisha's hand, the cheapest-looking bag turned out to be the most expensive in reality. "But I hadn't thought of it this way," she said quietly. Mother replied, "That's exactly why it's important to pause and look carefully."

They also checked the zips, straps, and the weight of the bag — because heavy schoolbooks had to be carried every day. They also considered how Nisha actually handled her bag. "Sometimes I drop it down quite hard," Nisha admitted honestly. So the ₹1,100 sturdy bag turned out to be the closest match to their needs — its stitching and material were both strong enough to survive being placed carelessly, without easily breaking.

That evening, Nisha's father explained at home that "best value" did not always mean cheapest or most expensive. It meant the item that truly met their actual need, would last as long as required, and whose total cost had been thought through carefully. Father said, "This same thinking helps when choosing a house, a vehicle, or any big decision in life." Nisha wrote in her notebook: "Cheap ≠ Economical. Calculate the whole cost."

At school the next day, Nisha showed Ragini the paper with all three bags compared. Ragini said, "My mother always just picks the cheapest." Nisha said, "I used to think the same way. But you have to look at the total cost and what you actually need together." Ragini asked if she could take the paper home to show her mother. For the first time, Nisha felt that a simple calculation had helped her understand something important — and that it could reach others too.
