The Rule That Hurt One Person

Ninth-grader Divya was a bright, warm-natured student who happened to have Type-1 diabetes. The entire class would be formally informed of this arrangement, including Divya\'s medical condition, stated clearly and respectfully. Divya herself said, 'I want everyone to know — no secrets, no whispers.' The principal addressed the full class to explain the adapted rule. Not one student objected — because when people understand the purpose behind a rule, and when they see justice being served, acceptance follows naturally.

The incident led the school to form a new policy: any medical or special need, supported by documentation, could be formally presented to the examination committee for a reasonable accommodation. Divya learned that speaking up for justice is first and foremost an act of caring for oneself — and that is not selfishness; it is wisdom.

That year, Divya scored the highest marks in science in her class. But far more important was what she showed her classmates: that a rule is just only as long as it serves the wellbeing of those it was designed to protect. When a rule itself begins causing harm, changing it requires courage, reasoned argument, and mutual respect. Her classmate Arjun said it best: 'Divya taught us — sometimes changing a rule is not breaking it. It is making it stronger.'
