Aruni of Panchala: Sacred Duty & Dedication

महर्षि धौम्य के आश्रम में आरुणि नाम के निष्ठावान शिष्य अध्ययन कर रहे थे। एक दिन भारी वर्षा होने लगी और खेत की मेड़ टूटने का संकट उत्पन्न हो गया।

In the hermitage of sage Dhaumya, young Aruni studied diligently. One afternoon, torrential rains threatened to breach the agricultural embankment.

गुरुजी ने आरुणि को खेत की मेड़ की रक्षा करने का आदेश दिया। आरुणि कुदाल लेकर दौड़े, परंतु पानी का वेग इतना तेज था कि सारी डाली गई मिट्टी बह जाती थी।

The master sent Aruni to protect the bund. Aruni piled earth frantically, but the fierce torrent washed away every shovelful in seconds.

रात हो गई और ठंड बढ़ गई। यदि पानी न रुकता तो सारी फसल नष्ट हो जाती। आरुणि स्वयं उस टूटी दरार में लेट गए और अपने शरीर से जल के प्रवाह को रोक दिया।

Night fell and the cold deepened. Knowing the crop would be destroyed by morning, Aruni lay his own body across the breach as a living dam.

प्रातःकाल गुरुदेव शिष्यों के साथ खेत पहुँचे और आरुणि को ठंडे जल में लेटे पाया। गुरुजी ने उन्हें हृदय से लगाया और कहा, "वत्स! तुम्हारी यह कर्तव्यनिष्ठा इतिहास में अमर रहेगी।"

At dawn, the sage discovered Aruni shivering in the icy mud. Weeping with pride, he blessed Aruni with the title Uddalaka and eternal wisdom.
