🌟 Moral of the Story
"Compassion, responsibility, and protecting the vulnerable."

In the ancient kingdom of Ushinara ruled Emperor Shibi, a monarch immortalized for absolute righteousness, boundless philanthropy, and unswerving commitment to protecting any creature seeking sanctuary. Under his reign, the royal vow was sacred: whether an insect or an emperor, whoever sought refuge under the royal umbrella was shielded at the peril of the King's own life. As the renown of his incorruptible compassion reached the celestial spheres, King Indra and Agni, the God of Fire, resolved to descend to earth and test the ultimate limits of his virtue.

One afternoon, as King Shibi presided over the royal assembly, a breathless commotion stirred the high hall. Darting through the arched marble windows flew a pristine white dove, its heart fluttering in terror. Plummeting toward the throne, the exhausted bird buried itself within the folds of Shibi’s royal mantle, trembling violently. Stroking the bird’s ruffled feathers with paternal gentleness, the King spoke with sovereign assurance: 'Fear not, tender creature! You have sought sanctuary beneath my breast; no power in the three worlds shall harm a single feather of your body.'

Instantly, a shadow fell across the hall as a formidable hunting falcon with razor talons and piercing golden eyes swooped onto the balustrade. To the astonishment of the courtiers, the raptor spoke in articulate human speech: 'O King of Ushinara! You are celebrated as the custodian of Dharma. This dove is my natural, divinely ordained quarry. I have stalked it across leagues of sky; I am famished. By shielding my prey, you unlawfully deprive a starving creature of sustenance! If I perish of hunger today, my blood shall stain your soul. Is it righteous to save one life by starving another?'

The court was paralyzed by the falcon’s formidable legal argument. Shibi contemplated the moral crossroads: to surrender a creature that had sought sanctuary was treason to the soul; yet to starve the falcon was to inflict death. Looking into the predator's eyes, the monarch spoke: 'Noble bird, my ancestors never abandoned a soul that pleaded for refuge. I cannot deliver this innocent dove to thy talons. Yet neither shall you starve. Demand of me herds of sheep, wild venison, or cattle from my royal preserves to satisfy your hunger.' The falcon sneered: 'Sire, I am a creature of the skies, not a scavenger. If this dove is so precious to your conscience, carve an exact equal weight of flesh from your own living body and place it upon the scales!'

Horrified gasps echoed through the chamber; ministers begged the king to reconsider. But Shibi’s face glowed with transcendent joy. He ordered a large brass balance to be set in the center of the court. Placing the dove tenderly upon the left pan, Shibi drew his jewel-hilted dagger without a tremor. With a serene smile, the monarch sliced a substantial portion of flesh from his own right thigh, placing the bleeding tribute upon the right pan. But a supernatural marvel occurred: the balance did not budge; the dove's pan remained pinned to the marble. Shibi sliced further from his left thigh, then his flanks, heaping living flesh upon the scale. Blood cascaded over the dais, yet the tiny bird grew inexplicably heavier with every offering!

Stripped of muscle, bathed in crimson gore, his limbs shivering with physical shock, King Shibi’s spirit burned with an invincible, luminous serenity. Realizing that severed fragments were insufficient, the monarch grasped the brass chains with his trembling hands and stepped bodily onto the scale, placing his entire living frame upon the pan. Folding his hands, he whispered: 'Behold, noble falcon! My entire body and breath are surrendered to thee; feast upon this offering and let the dove fly free!' At that supreme moment of total self-immolation, the heavens opened. Celestial drums resonated across the cosmos and divine blossoms rained upon the court. The falcon dissolved into the blazing radiance of King Indra, and the dove expanded into the glowing splendor of Agni, the Fire God. Indra placed his immortal hand upon Shibi's brow: instantly, the gaping wounds vanished, and the King’s body was restored with golden, youthful perfection. Indra proclaimed: 'Blessed art thou, Emperor Shibi! In all the three worlds, there is none whose devotion to the helpless matches thine. So long as the sun and stars illuminate the firmament, your supreme sacrifice shall stand as the eternal benchmark of universal compassion.' The sacred epic endures across the ages: he who offers his own life to defend the vulnerable attains a throne that outshines the empires of heaven.
