The Champion Who Came Second
Dev had trained with his school’s running group for months. He planned his mornings around practice and kept going even on days when improvement felt slow. At the annual race, he felt ready to win.
He ran strongly and crossed the finish line second, a few steps behind Kunal. His first feeling was disappointment. He had worked hard, and he wanted the medal. He took a moment before walking over to Kunal and saying, “You ran well. Congratulations.” He meant it, even though he still wished the result had been different.
Their coach reviewed the race with both runners. Dev noticed that he had rushed at the start and lost energy in the final stretch. The coach helped him set one practical goal: learn to pace the first half more steadily. Dev wrote it in his training diary.
At school, a few friends called second place a failure. Dev disagreed. “The race has a winner, and I wanted to be that person. But I also know what I did well and what I can improve.” He did not hide his disappointment or pretend that results never mattered. He simply refused to measure his entire ability by one ranking.
Dev returned to practice. He celebrated Kunal’s achievement, worked on his pacing, and remained proud of the effort he had made. He learned that a competitor can be respected, a result can be taken seriously, and a person can still grow after not winning.
