🌟 Moral of the Story
"Greed can make you lose what you already have."

Along the bustling trade bazaars and river ghats of Kashi roamed Kalu, an agile yet relentlessly covetous stray dog. Refusing the domestic servitude of a single master, he survived by scavenged cunning, staking claims wherever food scraps were discarded. Yet no matter how abundantly he fed, his inner craving remained unquenched; his dominant instinct was always to hoard more and violently snatch morsels from other creatures. His insatiable greed made him an outcast among the local strays.

One fortunate morning, as a town butcher was dressing prime cuts, Kalu seized an opportune distraction and snatched a massive, marrow-rich bone from the chopping block. It was an extraordinary prize, sufficient to feast upon for hours. Knowing that lingering in the marketplace would ignite a vicious brawl among ravenous strays, he clamped his jaws tight and sprinted toward the forested boundaries of the town, resolved to gnaw his prize in absolute seclusion.

Intersecting the forest path was a crystal-clear mountain stream fed by highland springs. Spanning the tranquil waters was a rustic timber footbridge. Swelling with predatory pride and gripping the prize firmly between his canines, Kalu trotted onto the weathered planks. Reaching the midpoint, he slowed his pace. The surface of the pool below was so undisturbed and limpid that it formed a flawless natural mirror. Curiosity piqued, Kalu leaned over the timber railing and peered into the liquid depths.

Reflected upon the surface was the sharp visage of another dog staring upward, clamping an identical bone between his jaws. In reality, it was merely his own vibrant mirror image cast upon the glassy pool. But distorted by ignorance and blinded by rapacious desire, Kalu was incapable of rational discernment. His covetous instincts flared instantly: 'By the gods! Whence came this rival intruder in my territory? And look at his prize—his bone appears even thicker, juicier, and heavier than my own! If I intimidate this cur and snatch his prize, I shall possess a double feast!'

Greed entirely snuffed out the fragile spark of reason. It never crossed his fevered mind to question how a dog could breathe submerged under water. Bristling with territorial spite, he flared his nostrils, bared his fangs, and unleashed a ferocious bark to strike terror into his submerged counterpart. The split second his jaws opened, the grip was broken. The heavy, marrow-filled bone slipped from his teeth and plunged with a loud splash into the swirling mountain stream.

The moment the bone struck the water, concentric ripples shattered the mirror, and the phantom rival vanished into swirling foam. The heavy prize sank into the riverbed and was carried away by the rushing current into the deep gorge. Kalu stood paralyzed upon the timber planks, staring blankly at the empty water. There was no second dog, no second bone—and his own hard-won feast had vanished beyond retrieval. His unchecked rapacity had bartered tangible abundance for a fleeting illusion. Dropping his tail between his legs, famished and humiliated, he trudged back to the scorching dust of the city alleys. The ancient parable endures: he who despises contentment and schemes to grasp another's portion inevitably casts his own blessings into the abyss.
